  • Just my luck

I've been asked many times if I ever spawn any of my Discus and I always answered that they're always pecking on the driftwood but I've never taken the time to truly observe as I don't have any intention of trying to raise any fry.

Well, I finally have proof, just my luck it's my biggest with one of the smallest new discus I got at HAW. It looks like Goliath and PeeWee guarding the eggs

Ok, this is just getting crazy. The first batch disappeared as expected, but not to be denied they spawned again a week or so later, this time on an Eheim intake, grrrr. I figured the new batch would also disappear since the tank also has three more discus, besides the parents, numerous cardinal tetras, millions of assassin snails, abn's and cories. I wondered today why the pair was still hanging around the intake and believe it or not, they had moved the fry to an algae covered portion and I now have wigglers, well almost free swimmers. I can't cover the bottom of the intake without wreaking havoc in the tank so they're pretty much on their own.

                  Nancy,

Cut back on the flow rate of the filter if possible. Otherwise the parents are learning about location, location, location!

You already know this trick, but others may not know about it.

Here is a trick that I use in the breeding tanks.
I use a window a/c foam replacement filter from the local hardware store cut to wrap around the intake tube. Poke a toothpick through the filter and the tube to hold the filter on. sunrise

I went ahead and turned the filter off, I need to switch out cannister bottoms anyway and there's another filter running. I figured I'd at least give them a sporting chance, but more than likely, the tetras will get them when they become free swimming. The truth be told, I don't really have the time, inclination or space to start trying to raise discus. I'm still really surprised they've made it this far, they are not in RO water, just plain old, rock hard water from the tap. I was able to get a better picture today. I'm what you would call digitally, or pixel challenged .

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.
