If it were a Smokey/Smokey combo, you'd still be getting half smokeys, but you'd get 25% Silvers and 25% Chocolates. Or did you know all of that? If you did, sorry!

I haven't got into the genetics very fa, so no, I didn't know.  I knew I'd probably get some Smokies, but didn't know the ratio.

I figured that even if Szidlon knew what the genetics would make, somebody else might not. I just didn't know that you'd be asking as I posted! LOL

If you join The Angelfish Society you get a free download of a genetics calculator. You just enter in the genetics of the parents and it will tell you the types and percentages of the fry. The Angelfish Society has annual membership dues of $5.

Geez, Obed, giving away my secret! LOL! It's true, I love the calculator.  

Plus, if you're into angelfish, its fun to play with the calculator...What if I crossed a This to a That? And you end up learning things by playing with it...I didn't have to look up those crosses, I've been playing with those fish in the calculator a bunch lately. Just have to wait for them to grow up!!  

The genetics calculator is the whole reason I joined TAS.

Super, I'll do that this weekend since it seems my Angels are determined to make me a grandfishparent.  I really would like a pair of awesome looking black veils.  I just can't get the image of the ones I had out of my mind.  They were in a community tank and never had a successful spawn.  Funny, I mentioned them this weekend and even my drinking buddy from back then remembered them.

I returned home to any empty nest yesterday.  I was told the eggs were still there Wednesday morning, but there was a three or four hour power outage during the windstorm, meaning the lights went out.  I've removed the BN and will let them try a few more times before I try to artifically raise the fry.

I'm not quite ready to artifically raise the fry yet.  I normally have two or three sponge filters ready to go but I bought two new fry sponges from AngelsPlus and they aren't seasoned enough yet.  I figure another two or three weeks and they'll be ready to go.  I could take a sponge filter from my Betta tank, but I'd rather use the new ones.

They spawned again Sunday and I still have eggs  :dance:

So, at the very least they're improving in their parenting.  First spawn was in a community tank, no chance there of survival.  Second spawn there was a small Pleco in the tank and a power outage so either or both were detrimental to the eggs survival.

I think I can see little eyes in some of the eggs.  If they don't become caviar should I expect to see the "tails" pop out in the next day or so?  They've done a pretty good job of keeping the white eggs picked out but there are about a dozen or so still on the slate.  Should I do a water change, carefully, before and if they become wigglers?

Congrats! Hopefully this time they will raise them up big for you! I'm crossing my fingers!!

I think they hatch (and the tails pop out) about 60 hours after they're layed.

They're really quite interesting to watch.  It's probably my imagination but what I've seen is that at first they diligently removed all eggs that appeared to be turning white.  Now that the eggs are developing it almost seems like they are making judgement calls as to whether to remove the white eggs or not depending on how close they are to good eggs.  As if they know that removing the non-fertilized egg could/would harm the developing egg now that's the good egg is larger than when first laid and more closesly surrounded by other eggs.  I've seen them remove white eggs that are basically alone but not touch ones that are closely surrounded by good eggs.  I know this is all old hat to the experienced breeders but maybe my sharing will encourage others to try and parent raise Angels when possible.
