  • Lighting & filtration for fahaka

I have a 75g that I'm seriously thinking of housing a fahaka puffer in.

    My 2 questions are;

    1) will a 250 watt metal halide light be to much for a fahaka?

    2) will 2x aquaclear 110 hob's be adequate filtration for the fahaka long term?

    3) will a standard 75g 48x18x20 be enough space for the fahaka long term?

don't see why it would be, but you could definitely get away with much less.

I'd throw a canister filter on there, as well. A 2217 would do.

not long long term, but it will work until it reaches 8 inches or so. I actually have a bigger one in a smaller tank and he seems happy, so it will work......
My message was too short without this text. :)

No, I'm keeping the colony I have, but I don't see myself getting another colony anytime soon.

I would much rather have a puffer in the other 75g.

I got lots of trophs and petros (and emperor cichlids), but my girlfriend's favorite is my fahaka puffer.

Randall, I have been upgrading my troph tank.
            Here's the equipment now

            2x Eheim 2217's
            2x Koralia 4's
1x 250 watt Metal Halide Pendant with 250 watt 15,000K bulb
and 4x Blue Moon Glow LED's
1x Eheim Jager 200 watt heater

            23x F1 Tropheus Moorii 'Kazumba'
            1x F0 Petrochromis Polyodon

so no, my trophs are staying with me!
            I love my babies!

But I would like something different in the other tank.
I think it would be cool to have a veggie eating colony of flashy cichlids next to a meat eating solitary preditory puffer.
Plus, I love both fishes personality!

My petro is finally taking a little bit of the nls 1mm.
I think he just needed to settle in a little more.

              feed it a crewfish foo.
I ate my fish that died.

Do you have anything else? I agree with Peter, and also think that MHs aren't necessary unless you're trying to grow something (and usually not even then). They just produce so much heat. And 250W is pretty bright...But I don't know what fahakas prefer as far as lighting.

well, my fahaka was very skiddish of bright light for quite awhile...i had to use acitenic (spelling)...just for the first few weeks....then i got him weaned from that to a regular bulb....but i would think that MH would be too much for these little guys Brian.....

                      Aight.
                      I was just curious.
The mh pendant has 4x Blue Moon Glow LED's.

I'm with FL... I think less lighting would be nicer for the puffer...

Most of the time when I see vids of puffers in the wild or look up their habitat it's always murky water or their living is always inbetween roots or buried in the sand. I would think dimly lit tank would give it a nicer appeal.

do they really need that much of filteration? each 110 is rated at 500gph, so turn over rate is over 14x... i am thinking 'maybe' i'll get a fahaka for my 150 instead of a pair of turtle...

aquaclear really only turnover like 350gph when you add the strainer and media and such.
