  • Traditional Gravel info;

    I compared some "regular" old gravel to what seems to be the most common standard gravel sold today ( Natural #3 blasting sand).
    The old sand is mostly +8 screen (and not much larger) ,the #3 is mostly +16 (and -10). They have about the same amount of "fines" (-50), about 1%.
    I was interested because the new (#3) looked much smaller with more fines. The tests were limited by the fact that I have no screens larger than #8. (I have :8, 9, 10, 16, 50 and 100 ).

      My guess is the screen size is related to the size of the gravel or sand and it's ability or inability to pass through a certain size.
      Reasoning with some people is like trying to nail jello to a wall...

        Sorry. Some bags are marked with a "mesh" or screen size.
        The "mesh #8" of the old gravel is 0.098" =2.362mm, so that material is mostly a little larger than this size.
        The "mesh #16" of the "natural#3"-new gravel is 0.0469" = 1.19 mm; that material is a little larger than that. The #16 looks about the same size as window screen.
