  • Snail Problem

I have a low tech 20g planted tank with Threadfin Rainbows.
I have a pond snail infestation.
I need a good snail eating loach species that stays small that won't interfere or mess with the threadfins, but that can stay in the aquarium long term.
The only other fish in the tank are a Bearded Corydoras, a couple Nerites, a couple Tylos Snails, and a Panda Garra Rufa.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's a 20g densely planted tank, clowns get large albeit over time. PLus they can be aggressive at times.

I have been having a hard time with pest snails. I have pond, trumpet, and ramshorn. To combat this I started feeding right befor my lights come on and when they do come on. I Vac out every one I see. As for the Vacuum. I use an old Mag 350 with longer hoses. Works pretty good. I do still have snails but nothing like it was.

dwarf puffer fish! I'm breeding snails for them...

they live peacefully with my other fishes.

the pea puffers will do the trick, although i keep mine in a species only tank. i had 4 in a 10 gal, and when i go on vacation, i load up the tank with pond snails. they hunt out every single one while i am away.

assassin snails would also take care of the pests, and they control their own population. they will cannibalize eachother if there are too many. but i have heard of them teaming up on other snails like nerites, so they would need to be moved.

other than traps and kill on site...its just a pain

Assassin snail sounds like a good solution. They are not bad looking themselves.

I my self am open to puffers. We have had them in the past and loved them. But Big, the person who started this post has narites and tylos. Puffer would eat them too.

yes...the puffers would nip/harass the nerties and tylos until they eventually died. i moved my nerites to another tank before adding in the puffers.

the nerites and tylos would have to be moved with either of my options

I agree. Just cleaning out every one I see. Every water change day has gotten them under control. There are some in there but you don't see them every where you look.

My tank is also my long fined albino bristle nose pleco's tank. They are a breeding pair. I would be afraid puffer would kill and eat fry. I my go back to keeping shrimp.uffer wouldn't be good for them either.

The snail traps really do work but you have to empty it daily. Assassin sails will not get all of the trumpet snail. As Troy said vacuum them out daily when the lights come on. that will help get them under control

My grow out tank has sand bottom. It is infested with tiny snails. I don't think I can vacuum that.
