    Re: Substrates

Screw big als's at least for heavy stuff, i just saw what he would charge for shipping with the weight of the flourite, its like a buck or two less than petsmart sells the stuff, not worth the wait, maybe mike will have a better price at Sunny's will have to ask him.

      Re: Substrates

Here's a Different approach, cheap, and more or less what I have in my planted 75 with great results.

      75gal heavy planted tank
      pea gravel on soil substrate
      DIY CO2
3 zebra botias, 9 glowlights, 2 yoyo loachs, wild guppies

      55gal planted
      same substrate
      DIY CO2
1 gold, 1 zebra, 4 koi, 2 dark zebra angels, ghost & amano shrimp

          Re: Substrates

from what everyone said on aquaticplantcentral, the flora base still needs ferts (at least they did i know arm uses it in one tank and the plants there do ok) and on the package it used to say replace after a year of use. basically its very very similar to the aquasoil that adg uses, looks the same except for color too, so its great for root grow, but so is soil and soil is a hect of a lot cheaper, nothing horrible wrong its not going to mess up your tank but you can get similar if not better results with less money spent.

Has anyone tried this as substrate in an aquarium?

I know it's probably not as ideal as, say, flourite, but just wondering. Think it would be okay to use?

if you look through the tech sheets and what not it sounds like just soil, it recs. that you add plant food tablets since its not a fertilizer substitute. i use flora base in my little nano and i dont fertilize the tank cause of the RCS in there and the HM and riccia is a beautiful green and growing like weeds.

Yeah, I noticed it doesn't fertilize, but in this particular tank I just have pea gravel anyway. I think I might try it. I'll post some pics when I get it set up, if anyone is interested.  :)

if you are not wanting to purchase a big ole bag of substrate village tropical sells smaller portions fairly priced, its how i got the flora base for my nano.

Yeah, that's true, I've seen the smaller bags...but it's a 10 gallon, so it would probably be better to buy the bigger bag. Thanks, though!
