New project - 2 gallon shrimp tank

how many shrimp can that 2 gallon hold at most? Do I need gravel? as I'm just doing a java moss pad right now. I'm thinking about growing them out then spread them around the other tanks since they're all planted I hope some will survive while other will become an occasional food source for the bigger fish.

At most? I could put a good 50 shrimp in there, but most people would try and burn you for that. Gravel isn't needed and since you're going to be doing a moss wall and carpet, that should be enough. Sand would be great to add if you'd like. It's not as messy as you think.

well.. I might have to find some substrate somewhere I'm not gonna mess with sand for now. I thought since the moss doesnt root I didn't want any substrate.. but I guess I should

Moss actually does root itself. My mosses rooted to my driftwood. It did take a few months and the help of some cotton thread, but it's well rooted now

To gravel moss doesnt... Mine didnt root to my gravel as well as the driftwood. But i feel that this moss wall and carpet is more manageable than the last one since they are small i can trim them any time. Along with duckweed I hope it can help filter the tank well. Maybe i'll add a thin later of gravel for some bacteria.

do i need to cover this shrimp tank? Or should i just lower the water lvl to an inch below the top?

planning on growing out a lot of shrimp then spread them around in my 10 and my 40 so there will be some natural live food when my fish needs some. As they are heavily planted i'm sure some will live

Moss actually roots to gravel too! It just takes some time and cotton thread.

Having a top will lower water evaporation. You shouldn't need one, but then again, some people's shrimps jump for no reason.

Also, pea puffers might not touch the shrimp. Mine don't bother CRS.

Bacterial bloom started this morning!!! It's happening it's happening!! Throwing an old media in there really help!

On another note, half of the downoi I got from petsmart is just kinda melting.. I know they were grown emersed so that's kinda expectable.. but I'm hoping to see them bouncing back and start growing soon, as they look kinda depressing now.

I've noticed pumping a lot of CO2 into the tank helps minimizing the melting. When I flooded my HC tank, I pumped it with a ton of CO2. None of it melted. In fact, they turned greener!

downoi melted badly I have like 1 portion left still survive.. even though I put a lot of root tab underneath the substrate.

On the other hand, dwarf hairgrass is starting to send out runners as soon as I remove the old moss carpet. Pygmy chainsword is also doing great, I haven't seen the goldfish uprooting them.

lol i just bought two more packages... hope these make it... i may try to grow some emersed to test them out
