Re: 5g Fluval Chi Nano (Updated with pics 11.14.12)
Yeah they are the first week. It leeches out ammonia. If you keep up daily water changes for a week, it'll settle down. It's great stuff! I notice a huge difference from the eco complete African cichlid sand. The plants are rooting faster and growing fast.

the amazonia is great substrate but I heard that they can be toxic at first so I was scared of getting them.

I didn't want to go looking around for eco complete substrate so I just went ahead and bought the ADA amazonia from City Pets when they had their anniversary sale.

I use the root tabs for iron, so I just dose flourish. My red crypt wendtii are my indicators if my iron is low.
If the pellets are too big you can cut it. I used to crush the larger pellets for my small fish

yeah I'm trying to find some mini pellets food for the stock. big pellets are scary imo as the smaller fish often choke on them. Feeding with Cobalt Aquatic fish food, they're great. You can see the color of the fish becoming more vibrant. My new goldfish are still shy so I'm waiting for them to get used to the tank.

I do it differently, My tank is 40 gallon. I dose flourish iron at half cap every week, excel is at 2ml a day. It helps the fish adjust better than big dosage at once. If my red root floater turn green I know there isn't enough iron in the tank so it's a great way to indicate nutrient need.

With goldfish you want high protein foods. There's the nls goldfish pellets that are great. Flakes work too but you want them to soak for a good while so that way it can expand before the fish eats it. There's puppy chow too. Supposedly high packed with protein. Microworms are high protein too.

With the help of scorpioswife, I just changed out my tank livebearers crew for 2 baby lionhead goldfish. I'm looking into some good fish food type for these. I enjoy the new stock, just the goldfish and the neon tetra much less chaotic compared to earlier.

Re: 5g Fluval Chi Nano (Updated with pics 11.14.12)
I overdose flourish (20-30 drops twice a week) and underdose excel (5-10 drops every 2-3 days). I'll slowly increase dosage of excel as the plants adjust
I also have 6 seachem root tabs in the substrate

Ah forgot the Cory hasbrosus. I have 2 but I want 3 more, and 5 more mixed micro corys (pygmy and some other one). Weekly 25% wc. The tank stays crystal clear. I feed a swab of microworms and a pinch of nls 0.5mm about every 4-5 days. Keeps the tank clean.

I underdose all my fertilizers and excel. I found that to be safer. It will slow your plant growth a bit comparing to full dose but the difference is hardly noticeable.

throw in some new pictures!!!! wow that's a bit heavy on the side for stocking but it should be fine. I overstocked my tank.... just keep up with water change and keep the plants thick

Oh and I've added another 20H light fixture to it until I get the lamp and par38 bulb. It's holding up well and dhg is growing great. Bulbs are 15w each. Not sure what the temp is though.

Re: 5g Fluval Chi Nano (Updated with pics 11.14.12)
Nothing to be jealous about. Lmao. My first attempt at planted tanks and nano tanks. I think it looks pretty sloppy and noobie. I like how your tank is setup. I'll have more updated photos when I get home. The plants are growing much better now.
At first I did the recommended dosage. 50 drops after water change and 10 drops daily. That was way too much for the shrimp and plants to handle. I have been dosing 10 drops every 2-3 days even after water change. Mosses and floater were melting way too much but are adjusting slowly.
