Any ever try this? I've read mixed reviews and really haven't done too much research on it. Just wondering what y'all think about it.

Honestly, it's not really worth the time.
I can give a dissertation on it but the cliff notes are:
1 you spend a few months with an empty tank then get to fill later and watch it cycle through emmersed to submersed growth
2 this process leads to other algae hassle issues that are avoidable just starting filled.
3 you can't fully realize a killer total layout this way with the inteicacies of multiple plant layouts etc etc.
I've done it both ways by now - and definitely wouldnt recommend doing it the "dry" way.

For me I wasn't concerned about time I just had the light on the timer and with the plastic wrap I didn't lose any water. I spent very little effort and it grew quite quickly. I just left the tank there for a few months and it was filled with a very nice carpet. I recently just filled it and I agree there has been an algae breakout but I have been dosing lots of co2 and macros and hopefully it will help.
