  • New planted tank

I finally got my tank planted with assorted plants from Fish Gallery. The tank was previously cycled before changing to planted tank. I added lots of Neon Tetras, gohst shrimp, Rummynose tetras, Chinese catfish, Blue Rams and black Phantom Tetras.

The tank is definitely filled with life. My plants consist of assorted Crypts, swords, annubias, java fern, Java moss.

How long should I wait to add extra fertilizer to thee water? The plants look great as of now, but have only been in the tank since last Saturday.

Want to post pics., but having problem with the uploader for some reason. :(

what are your light levels and are u dosing co2? none of those plants are going to require massive ferts anyways, most are slower growers other than the crypts and swords. i would def put some root tabs around those at least. watch your plants and they will tell you when you need to dose dry ferts

I am not sure on what my light levels are. I am using a ZOO Med Aquatic fixture with t5 HO- 2-24watt 6,500k and 5,000k bulbs. I am not using any Co2. The aquarium is pretty deep so I hope the lighting will be sufficient. I posted a pic on another thread in this section, before I added fish.

i have recently gone back to two sets of photoperiods per day so that the lights are on for 6 hours at a time when i am home and can enjoy them and off while i am at work and sleeping. i feel shorter but more intense lighting keep sthe algae down. seems to be working okay. your lights are prolly in the low light catagory for that tank, especially if it is really deep (lights are more than 18 inches from the substrate). i dont see a problem with the plants that you listed tho. you wont get much red coming out on the rubin swords without more light. +1 to dosing with some excel.
