Starting a canister filter is easy. The rena filters have a cap on the input line that you use the supplied funnel to fill the line so it starts right up. Eheim canisters are just as easy..

My fluval has a primer as well - no issues with pump starts and stops.

i had the 405 on my planted 75, and it worked fine. i also have a 2217. both are easy to prime.
a drop checker is a better way to judge co2 then a ph controller, there are way more things that can make the ph fluctuate then co2 concentration. (of course thats my opinion)
i used to have my co2 go on and off with the lights without issue, and plenty of growth.
never had an end of tank dump, and not that it doesn't happen, but i think thats one of those overrated problems thats been hyped by a lot of fish forums

I went to the pasture and got several hundred pounds of the best holey rock I have seen. I want something easy to maintain, so this build is going to be an african tank with fake plants, holey rock, and pfs. The reef is enough to keep up with. Lol. If the reef comes down I will be doing a planted tank. I am going to start a new thread in the correct section.

well too bad on giving up on the planted tank for now, but I will ad a +1 to everything complexity wrote in case someone else is reading. I have been using the same Eheim pro 2126 on my 75 since they came out with no problems and it has a priming bulb so thats not an issue either. I tired one of the eheim wet/dry cannisters and yes that wastes all the CO2, same thing with bio-wheel filters. My experience with holeyrock is that it hardens your water so its a poor choice for s. american or asian setups. I have injected CO2 an hour before the main lights come on, with the same timer as my "dawn" lights, and that seemed to work the best. I takes time for the plants to gear up for photosynthesis as well so the CO2 building probably isnt that big of an issue since many plants respirate CO2 through their roots at night anyways.
