One question here don't the goldfish put off a lot of ammonia and wouldn't that kill the neon's?

Just have good enough filtration and you're good.

Cool... Good to know this... So do goldfish really eat smaller fish? The reason why I ask is that I have one fairly big goldfish and two neon and two tetra's and I would like to put them all in one tank but if the goldfish really does eat smaller fish then I would not be able to do this.

Goldfish can grow quite large and if given the oppertunity would gladly try for any available food. There are quite a few fish that do not actively engage in predatory behavior, but given an easy oppertunity would take advantage of it. Imagine a fully grown Koi and a tank full of guppies....

Goldfish will eventually eat your smaller ones if they can fit inside its mouth

As stated before goldfish will outgrow and eat smaller fish, but if u want to do it is your call.

ANY fish, if given the opportunity, will eat any smaller fish that will fit into it's mouth. yes, goldfish do produce high levels of ammonia, but all fish do, and as i saw mentioned earlier, with proper filtration, this won't be an issue. you say the tank is planted, this would help with this problem, but don't goldfish eat/tear up live plants? this may be a problem later as they grow. also, goldfish are cool-water fish which require different water parameters from the tetras, who are from south america and like very warm water. i wouldn't mix the two if i were you. however, danios of all types and white clouds do very well with goldfish, at least until the goldfish grow big enough to eat them. also weather loaches (aka dojo loaches) can make very interesting companions.

hi guys... I'm just back from hiatus due to an extremely bad respiratory problem. .. have been sick for the past 4 weeks. The goldies are doing well along with the rest. I'm still learning about lionhead behavior. They're quite unique comparing to other types of goldfish. I found that lionhead gets tired quick and rest more often. This might be due to their disability of not having a full set of fins. When they rest.. they just hover around the tank. They swim slower than most fish. My neon tetra swim much faster than them so for the time being they're safe. The tank is at 73 degree which is fine for neon and lionhead. My lionheads like eating red root floaters, they leave other plants alone. I feed them low protein foods and let them forage on the plants in the tank. I talked to a man who've been keeping goldfish for years, he said from his experience if goldfish are fed with low protein food from 29-39% they grow slower and live longer. A lot of things he shared make sense.
I have the patience of a goldfish....

I went to aquarium world recently and i picked up a blue oranda, pom pom, and black moor. the pandas didnt look panda at all and wasnt worth $17 to me. The bubble eyes looked cool but dont think they would be bubble eyes any longer after awhile

at 73 degrees your neons will have a very low immune response and will be prone to ich and other health problems.

Shouldn't be prone to much as long as he feeds them on a regular schedule, do water changes, and if he doesn't introduce more livestock (or at least a minimal amount).

You'd be surprised at how well fish can learn to adapt. I've got this tetra that sits in a bucket and up until yesterday he was in 40-50 degree water. I recently added a heater just in case the temp drops lower than that. Didn't have a heater before, so whatever our Houston weather was is what the temp of the water would be.
