  • Question about snails

I keep reading folks talking about nerites - but can't get much good info on line for them other than marine.  It mentions freshwater nerites as existing, but in a passing reference.  Are folks on here mostly looking at the freshwater or saltwater varieties?

Do freshwater nerites have any benefit over mystery snails?

    Freshwater.
They don't burrow under substrate like mysterys tend to do.

    Algae Eating Olive Nerite Snail

    a.k.a. Olive Nerites, Olive Snails
    Neritina reclivata

    TEMP: 50 - 100   pH: 6.2 - 8.5

-Probably One of the Best Algae Eating Snails you will ever Own!

-THEY WILL NOT REPRODUCE IN FRESHWATER!

-THEY WILL NOT EAT YOUR PLANTS

These little fellas are actually about the size of a dime or a marble, and have neat little barnacles growing on the shells.  Probably about the best algae eating snail for aquariums in the world, as they DO NOT reproduce in freshwater, but only in brackish or saltwater.  YES, we have them here at the nursery in our FRESHWATER pools so you need not worry about any acclimation process unless you want them BACK in Saltwater.  They may lay "pretzel- salt-looking" eggs, but they won't hatch unless the eggs are laid in, at least, brackish water at an optimum temp.  Great for keeping GLASS, & PLANT LEAVES clean!  NO, They won't eat your plants either.  What else could you want in a snail?

      Re: Question about snails

They are the absolute best thing to happen to the aquatic hobby!!!!!

I have tons in all of my tanks, fresh or salt. Most of the ones available for freshwater are acclimated brackish/salt snails.

For those that were looking for some I saw some at Aquarium World for $1.69.....they were mislabeled or not labeled as trapdoor snails.

          Re: Question about snails

A member of NASH actually collects them and I did a group buy once....funny cause when I offered it at group buy price and when the NASH member offered it no one cared or said much and now that both sources are out everyone wants them.

I think I had like 100 of them in one of my tanks at one point.....they wiped out all the algae in an instant and I purposely grew algae in there!

Thanks for the cool answers :)

My mystery snails have left my substrate alone - prefering the jar I have in there, the airlines, and a couple rocks.  They just laid eggs and I am waiting for them to hatch...

                KOOL,
make sure the egg clutchs don't get too wet and whatnot. I bred tons of
those snails till thay became so inbred and disfigured from the lack of calcium
                in the tank.

Too wet is a problem too?  I knew drying out was bad...

*sigh* I hope to see them hatch.

I have added a bit of calcium from time to time just in case - some of the shells are looking thin because of how fast the snails have grown since I got them.

                    Re: Question about snails

                    Yes.
Once my snails layed egg clutches above the waterline, if I
filled the tank up and the clutches got submerged non of them hatched.
Even the ones that got submerged just for a little bit of time too.

                      Re: Question about snails

I love olive nerites. They are the only snails that i will willingly have in my tanks these days.
Eggs don't hatch in FW so there is little chance of infestation.

                        Re: Question about snails

I recently ordered some nerites from www.planetinverts.com. They were "Neritina natalensis," the zebra kind. Awesome, awesome. I am almost tempted to say they've done a better job than the "regular" olive nerites I have in my tanks. But that could be because they're a bit larger than the olives that I have.

Not to be sour but those nerites that go for $5 on Ryan's site I have bought at All About Fish for $1.99.

I did it with a few of them.....just slowly lowered salinity over the course of about 2wks. did it both ways actually.
