  • 40g Sulawesi Tank

I've had several people ask me to share my 'secret' for keeping sulawesi shrimps and snails. Here's my secret: there isn't one. This is a 40g breeder with Leslies Pool Filter sand as a substrate and rocks from the front yards around the neighborhood for the shrimp to climb on/ for algae to grow on. I have cardinal shrimp and yellow rabbit snails in the tank.

Filtration: Eheim 2217 with a large sponge prefilter
Lighting: Coralife 2x36" T5 on for ~10 hours a day
Flora: Anubias and hornwort -- Anubius seems to be the only plants that the snails don't eat. The hornwort is floating to suck up excess nutrients.

I keep the tank at 80-82F. I do 15-25% WC weekly. I feed a wide variety of foods sparingly. NLS wafers, spirulina flake, shrimp pellets (yeah ... I said it), spinach, romaine lettuce, and NLS 1mm pellets.

Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

This is certainly not the only way to keep them . . . this is how I do it. Cardinal shrimp are one of the more forgiving (high end) sulawesi species.

Do you keep them in a 40 breeder or long? And do you also add crushed coral to raise the ph or just pfs?

I add nothing to raise the Ph. It is 8.0 out of the tap.

For the record, it is still considered cheating to do the obvious thing well.

I will attest to this... It's boggling how this use to be an invert thought to be hard to keep/breed.

I've heard people say both. I have no experience one way or the other... just because I try to keep one species per tank.

No. Half are 40 breeders. The other half are 24" by 24" by 12".

Cardinals will breed with other shrimp of the same genus. I know for sure people have mixed cardinals with gold-cheeks to get a pretty cool variant. So far the sentiment is pretty strong towards preservation of the natural lines, but I don't see this lasting, and I think sulawesi shrimp will eventually turn into the OB cichlid of the invert world. There will always be appreciation for the natural strains, which I am definitely a proponent of, but others will always want to push on.
