  • An almost lake rescue story

Behind my office is a large lake and I was walking back near the water this afternoon.  Mostly pond snails that has been making me think to get a puffer and minnows are in the pond and I've seen a few rosey reds that someone probably dumped back there.  Well today I spotted something very unusual, a spotted vampire pleco.  It was on it's back, and I noticed it was acting like when last week I messed up my sponge filter and my angel was suffering from the toxic water.

Well I went up to my office and grabbed my car keys and went to my car and got a 5 gallon bucket that I recently put there yesterday cause I needed some sand from a bag I was storing at my parent's house.  I scooped up the full grown pleco and put it into the overflow fountain thing, where the water is clear and not murky like the lake.  Although dying and floating on its back mostly when in the bucket, it still had some fierce fight in it.  I was unable to rescue the guy cause I didn't have all that I needed to transport and I had plans with my girlfriend and if I didn't make it cause I was doing fish stuff, I would be the one who would have to worry about getting killed.  I checked on the pleco two hours later and it didn't seem any better in the cleaner looking water.

I am going back first thing tomorrow morning, with two buckets and some water conditioner.  I know in all likely hood the fish is dead by now but if it still has life in it I am going to put it in fresh water and transport it here.  I have an established 20 gallon and with moving a few fish around I could put it in there.  I used this 20 gallon for my angel and once it got into good, clean, stable water my angel was returning to normal behavior within 20 minutes.

It is so unfortunate that since this full grown vampire pleco and was too big to flush that someone dumped it into the lake.  This is the case far too often I'm afraid.  If I the fish is still alive and I can get it to normal behavior would anyone want it?  It is simply too large for any tank I own but it is or was a beautiful fish.  Online you can buy these for $40.  It is a slight chance, so tune in tomorrow (Friday) and see if I was able to successfully save this poor abandon pet.

You're not a fish-lover by chance, are you?! :) Very nice of you, in deed.  Awaiting Chapter 2 with baited (pun intended) breath.

I have a question about something you said--"you messed up your sponge and made toxic water" what does this mean and how does it happen? The ortho my kid goes to has a service that takes care of their tank and last week we went in and NO fish, she said all of them died after he did a water change.....I want to make sure I dont do whatever causes this!   Thanks

If the water company did work on the water lines, it's possible they added more chlorine/chloramine to the water, and the dechlor wasn't enough to treat it.  Water companies do that when they work on lines, or during hurricane/storms when lines may have been breached or flow stopped.  They do'nt warn you either, not required to by law.  During Ike, I did water changes wth the pond water for this very reason.

Back to the topic though, I agree that it may be due to the water temp.  I also have a large indoor tank where I keep my pond plecos and several smaller tanks where I keep my crays and other tropicals that spend the rest of the year outside.  Hope he makes it.  I don't think pet stores that sell fish that grow to over 12" should be forced to accept them back when they outgrow the maximum in house fish tank that they also offer.  (i.e. if they sell a fish that gets to 12", they would have to carry in stock and readily available, a 120 gallon tank, or be forced to accept the fish as return for double the price it originally sold for....).  That's why there's plenty of large common plecos in Lake Houston.  Likely several Pacus and other fish (details on whats been discovered in several local waters can be found on the texas parks/wildlife site)

well cameo, marion, charles can tell part two. the fish was still alive when i left fish ranch in rosenberg, but barely. i thought it stopped breathing when i had left butTyler picked it up and we can`t fin tag it yet. If it is alive on Sunday it could only be a miracle. I would be surprised if it lasted an hour after Ieft F.R. If it is breathing tom. oh the story will be so great. But chances are bulimically slim.

Sponge filters are awesome mechanical filtration. The sponge can carry lots of good bacteria. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled I was on some stuff and I usually clean on weekends. I cleaned my sponge so well and did a large water change. I basically caused `new tank syndrome` It sucked. I killed the girl angel but saved the boy [thanks zoolab]. Bacteria can be good. Ammonium or Nitrite can spike quick. Established tanks have good bacteria. Over cleaning can be worse than under cleaning, over feeding the same. I over cleaned.  A painful or discouraging or costly lesson.
