That would definitely do it. It would work a few times, but buying a whole new filter will eventually kick up a "mini cycle" which would kill off one if not all your fish. Go buy an aquaclear 110 and you won't ever have to touch the filter again. Just don't use the carbon that's included. Keep up weekly water changes of at least 50%.

Once a month I change the filter completely.Dispose of the old one, purge the new one and install.

Do not have a kit and my water is not chlorinated we use well water. Once again this is the 1st time this has happened and Ive done this off and on for about 30 years. I have already disposed of the water and like knucklehead I didnt even think about a water sample. I thank yall so much for the replies, please keep them coming. Thanx Calvin

I wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions. Surprisingly enough, I've seen tanks go years without water changes, but the fish were healthy. I do agree that 20% every 6 weeks isn't enough.

Crw, I would start doing 50% water changes every week with dechlotinator if possible. That'll ensure your water quality is good.

20% is the prescribed amount or so I was thinking, never been a problem in the past, for the fish to go from healthy to dead overnight it seems something else is the culprit. Thanx

I agree. Nitrate toxicity kills slowly. The fish would've shown signs of distress and would've stopped eating prior to dying. However if one fish died in there and started releasing copious amounts of ammonia/nitrate into the water, that may have done it if the filter was overwhelmed.

Did you check your aerator? Lackluster filtration and low water changes would kill the fish, but you would not see multiple species die in one night, especially a Pleco. My opinion...

Possible. There is a large common pleco in there and they create a ton of waste. We won't know for sure until or if he gets some water parameters.
