  • The 1.5 Gallon Hex Challenge

Even before I ever stopped being lazy and set up my first aquarium, I had always held some mild interest in keeping a fish (though it was my brother, not me, who had one as a child).  One day probably 10 years ago, my neighbors had a garage sale, and my mom acquired this aquarium for me.

It's a 1.5 gallon hexagon, standing about 10 inches tall (excluding the light).  It came with an undergravel filter, air pump, and a 15 watt incandescent light.  Out of boredom and curiosity, I dug this out of the closet and set it up.  To my surprise, everything still worked.  I added some gravel donated by rad-man, a plastic cabomba, and some random plastic decoration that I thought would provide suitable cover for any future inhabitants.....

But that's where I'm stuck.  I know that this is not an ideal living environment for anything, and I hestitate to confine anything in it.  That said, these tanks exist for a reason (albeit probably for pure commercial profit by preying on parents of fish-happy children).  I think they're marketed for bettas, but I don't know how much they like the flow from the UGF.

So, I ask of you all.... any ideas for what to throw into this 1.5 gallon, plastic, non-heated hexagon?

Any Gourami, paradise or Betta (anabantids)
      an O-cat or Large snail
and a koolie loach or pigmy cat.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Not sure, but it sure looks clean and pretty.

I still like the shrimp idea... or how about you ditch the light for something more substantial and make an awesome miniature planted if you don't want to confine any living creature to it. Kind of like an aquatic bonsai.

I was thinking miniture planted as well, with a shrimp or two....that would be cool, but maybe expensive?

A mini saltwater would be cool... I thought about doing a nano before trying something bigger.

I have one of those little triangle walmart tanks - I think they hold about 3/4 gallon.  I have 2 little dwarf frogs in it, a moss ball and some anachris.  VERY low maintenance except I know they like frozen bloodworms and I give that about once a week (the most expensive part of their care).  They also eat a tiny bit if tropical flake on the other days.

Pacus... yeah...  :P   Maybe a redtail cat too.  Those are pretty.

Mini planted definitely crossed my mind (especially with shrimp), but retrofitting a more substantial light's going to be a bit troublesome given the small size and hexagonal shape.  Mini salt also crossed my mind, but I've never done salt before and didn't think this would be the place to start.

PhishPhreek has some pretty good ideas for fish.  I hadn't thought of adding an otto cat.  A snail could be fun as well... I haven't kept any in some time.

I considered a couple of white clouds... any thoughts on this?

FLOWERHORN!!! You should get a really nice fancy betta!!! Maybe a Crowntail or an OHM!!! That would be perfect for one! You could also stick a snail or two in there...maybe some Spixis, they don't grow big at all!! Man, that would look so cool with a really nice betta in it--like the ones you see from Thailand on Aquabid!

Why not get a screw-in compact fluorescent? Not sure what size the incandescent light is, but they make all sorts of sizes of PCs, even little tiny ones now. That way you might be able to grow more stuff in there. Any way you can post a picture of the light setup? Is it just a socket and some sort of metal reflector? Or just a socket? Is it covered? If you know anything about electronics and stuff, you could always put together an LED array...I wish I could do that.

I like the shrimp idea and the betta idea...not sure how they would like all the bubbles, though...Hmm...

I would hesitate to put schooling fish in there, just because you aren't going to be able to fit enough in there.

But, it looks good so far!
