  • Help me get rid of these snails!!

A couple months ago we made the mistake of buying some plants from Petco and got infested with snails. Luckily it's only 3 of the small tanks but they are multiplying rapidly. We can scoop out 10 snails and not see another on the tank and 30 minutes later there are more in there. Does anyone know of something that will eat them or a way to kill them that won't harm the fish in the tanks?

What kind of snails are they? I may take them for my puffers. They LOVE snails. *crunchy*

Assassin snails, many members have them for sale as well as a few stores downtown.

My swordtails are keeping the ramshorns from breeding. I think they eat the eggs. you can also set up a trap at night and remove them in the morning. take a bottle with a small opening and put fish food in it and stick it in the tank at night and in the morning you should have many snails in there.

+1 on the clown and yoyo loaches.

The other option is to use Mardel Coppersafe for a month. Do this only if you have no plans to keep inverts in the tank.

Assassins are too slow if the problem is bad. I had a friend buy about 100 assassin snails and they did eat two or three snails at a time but it didn't solve the problem. My clown loaches love to snack on snails. Clown loaches are the prettiest option. They look NICE!!!

If they only eat two or three at a time that would work. We get a few out and a little while later there is more of them in there. I don't want to add fish to any of the tanks as the three that have the snail problem have fry in them.

Back off on feeding. Only feed 1/2 as much as you did in the past. Add 1 assasin snail per 3-5 gallons. Wait 3-6 months and the problem will disappear. Copper is the only other thing that works. If you add it assasins will die too. Beleive me I tried it all and spent a lot of money on this. I tried 5 different fish and NONE ate up my MTS problem....PM Tim

In that case, I'd go for the assassin snails. Like fshfrk said, just buy a bunch and don't feed as much. Main problem people have with assassin snails not eating the snails is that they feed their fish normally or a bit much and snails get lazy too. They will eat the food you put in rather than putting in more effort to chase after other snails.

Changing out substrate could help. I know they bury down in it. I'm having a snail problem myself but in a tank with no fish. Started out as one snail several months ago and now I have no clue how many there are. I'm kinda intrigued by it honestly.

It could but if he has mts... Then that wouldn't do much. They get in your filters and are good at hiding. Then they'll just multiply in the new substrate. It'll be a PITA. I still say stick to the snails. They look nice and have benefits
