  • Sea shells how to clean

I got these shells from the beach but I want to get the salt off of them. I have them in a bowl of fresh water and they have been sitting there for about 18 hours. How do i get the salt off completely ?

I would boil up some water and toss the shells in. I'm not 100% sure if it'll remove the build up of salt, but it will definitely sanitize the shells.

I would bleach first and then boil.

I think this would be best .

It's just salt build up on the shells. But if you do happen to bleach first, make sure to add Prime or Amquel+ after boiling as a safety precaution. You wouldn't want all your fish to go belly up!

Salt is visible dead animal mater and bacteria aren't. Bleach ensures that you kill everything. Hearing salt makes me think these were picked up at the beach, therefore there's no telling what's in our on them.

This is very true , don't forget to use a de-chlorinator.

OP said he got them from the beach. Either way, if the water is hot enough and you let it sit, I doubt anything can live through it. But if the OP really wants to be sure, put bleach and again, don't forget to soak them in some sort of detoxifier after adding bleach and boiling.

Certain snails and bacteria can live through boilings. Boiling doesn't kill very thing. That's why the military still recommends using iodine tablets after boiling water o help purify. Bleaching kills but doesn't break down mater. Boiling softens and breaks looses bonds a mater/material.

Another thing, since salt doesn't evaporate boiling will not completely remove it, since it will be in the water.

+1 Salt does not evaporate. A lot of people still think that salt disappears. But all you need is for the salt to come off the shell since that is what is going in your tank.

Another thing to make sure of is that you turn the shells the the water if there's an area that can hold water, I.e. a cork screw type shell. In this case the easiest thing to do it to drill a small hole in the top of the shell to drain water, but you'll still have to spin the shell to ensure you get all debris and mater out of the shell. Honestly, I would use them. I go to a craft store and buy some that we're meant for decoration. These have been cleaned and sterilized better than I think 99% can do in home. I would still bleach then boil.
