I thought Glowfish were infertile... I read that the scientists that created them made it so that they could not reproduce to save natural water systems or something... Or, maybe that was just a rumor to stave off the environmentalists... Good luck with the babies though!!!

Glo-fish are just danios with jellyfish genes I belive...

I have a trio of those sunset platys and they are doing fine in my tank.....the panda cories is another story though.....bought 6 and have none left.

i think you can breed them but not for profit or distribution...

But if is illegal, and you just so happen to get babies.... i dont think anyone will come for you

I have some great ones i got out of the creek by my house.

I'm not sure how this got here... I would be funny if I did find some in a bayou. I was refering to some platties and some how the post found its way here.

Yes they are jellyfish genes- as is almost all fluorescent genes used in science today-

Heck I've made too many glowing cells & mice and years ago I discussed making these type of fish with my boss- since he is fish person too- but we decided it was too much hassle to go through with the gov't paper work- (oh if it isn't obvious I'm a researcher in the Med center) (and another side note- I was thinking more about using the "painted" fish so they wouldn't have to be injected to make their colors- or even some type of albino fish)

Now I'll use their work and have fun at home- If I get lucky enough I may get them to breed- they don't seem to be real intersted at this point- but time will tell- and who knows maybe I can get a few cross over events (genetics term) and get a multi colored fish-  

I've already got one with a "hole" in the fish- a small chunk of the fish has stopped producing the green fluorescence- looks like a big hole in him (yes male)! :mrgreen:

Awww! I want a glowing mouse!!! Do they glow on their own, or just under a blacklight??? Can you make glowing rabbits??? Now that would be something to breed and sell! LMAO! Maybe I should donate my three legged rabbit to science! It will probably be a himmie, so it will be mostly white. :bsjoke:

Do you have to put the "glow" in them when they are embryos though? I think it's really interesting!

hmmmmm I just read that if they are bred in an educational environment it is legal...double hmmmmmmmm.  I do need to teach life science in a few months and it would be for educational use.... (oops...not the mouse...the glow fish)

Yes basically only "glow" under a blacklight-

Of course we use the "glowing" to track genes of interest that we try to insert-

Right now I have some cells that you can see without any special light- enough GFP (green fluorescent protein) to see it "glow" in normal light- similar to these fish.

Now there have been some folks who make sure you get ridiculously high amount of GFP in the animals (mice and yes rabbits)

Of course we should just put up ancitic lights through our lab- probably be cheaper and safer than what we use and get the same effect! :)

HAHAHA! I have some Florida White bucks that glow green under a blacklight! They are only green because they have sprayed each other and themselves with urine! Also, a lot of my does will show up under a black light with green on their feet because of walking over wire that they have peed on! I guess I already have glowing rabbits... The mice are REALLY cool though!!! I think that they should sell "Glomice" and blacklight kits!!! LMAO!!

there were some decent tanks in the galleria mall - i guess managed by the mall management, one of them have been recently converted into a glofish tank, it has at least a 100 in it including some bent spine one's that have amazingly survived, nothing against anyone or don't want to offend anyone, but everytime i see these fish, it for some reason makes me feel like it is the start of a mutant future in terms of genetics for all species on earth, as much as we like to think we know all the pros and cons of gene manipulation, we don't and it scares me that some of the unknown side effects from tooling with genetics of species that can get out in the wild easily will eventually come back and bite us and it will probably be too late at that point, but who am i to judge and who knows what the future holds anyway! the future is inherently unpredictable and i guess thats what makes living for tomorrow worth it

I think those tanks are actually set up and maintained by aquarium enviroments/ fish gallery.
