I keep them and honestly they are not like your normal danios or tetras.....they hide and are really skittish.
When they first were introduced they were around $3 about a year ago(newly discovered sp.) Then they were over collected putting their habitat in danger so everyone and their momma jacked up the price for $10 ea! That's where the price has been for some time now.
Mike got some in and they were going for $4 which Tiapan scooped up. I have about 40 or so of them and have been trying to get them to breed but I'm not forcing them since I personally feel that they can do it themselves naturally and its less work for me.
$10 is pretty steep for such a little thing, specially if they die or are not hardy
ek, in your experience, are they hardy?
i want some really bad, but don't want to spend $10! on each, i maybe willing to spend $4 just because i want them badly, although, i think that is still steep, given that they can be bred in captivity
now, how about i get some of your frys :)

I think they are pretty hardy but the high demand caused by their endangered state probably cause the poor conditions they were kept in since daily collection was limited to a certain number the holding process was probably really poor so the ones caught early on suffered.....just a hunch.
Also the ones I have seen come into town were wasting away...super thin. The breeding in captivity thing is slowly catching on and since they are still really new to the trade and being pushed into the state they were in breeding in captivity or tank bred fish will probably take some time before they are flooding the market.
I don't really push mine to breed nor do I push myself to go through the troubles of netting eggs(since they are an egg scatterer) to raise....I prefer El Natural where they do what they do and the fittest survive. Also they have a really bushy Java fern bush that they tend to seek refuge in and I am almost definite that's where they are scattering their eggs so that would be a pain to try and find them in there. The little free swimmers I spot are super small but bigger then the ones I found in the Eheim canister that runs the tank so finding them and netting them could be a pain in the rear.
i am all for natural selection too, i will just wait to see if any of the stores get them, if you hear of any good LFS getting them, please let me know

Most will be for $10....the main LFS I see bringing them in is Fish Gallery but I think they have been struggling with their tanks since they opened cause everything seems to die or in the process of dieing....maybe new tank syndrome.
that's where i got the whiteclouds with problems (discussed in another thread)
but then i got the glowlights from there too
the reason i have bought from there is because i liked village tropical, i bought 6 cardinals from village in early 2005, they all lived for almost 2 years, i still have 2 of them left (more than 2.5 years now)

I am not saying not to get fish from there. I buy fish from there but I usually take control of my urge to bring fish home and watch the fish a lot longer then I usually do and if I feel the slightest bit weary about them I leave.
Some of their stock looks good/decent but others not soo well. I also noticed that the tanks that are not in the closed loop system is doing really well like their display tanks but those that are tied together are not so pretty.
I bought about 20 Celestial from them just so that I could have a diverse gene pool but I knew that I would lose most of them before it was all said and done and made my decision that it was worth it to have the greater gene pool but this was all when they stopped collection of these beauts. I lost about 10-15 of them.
I bought Clown Killies that I watched for about an hour for a few days and even asked how long they were there before I bought them and lost I think two of them.
I just keep an open mind when I go there and always fight my urges to spend money.
Oh, another thing.....I have never seen any that looked as good as the pictures you find on the internet or in magazines.
All of mine did not color up till recently but they were fed NewLifeSpectrum for months now and I really think that is what helped them after seeing what the stuff has done for all of my other fish.
i think thats a good idea to monitor the fish for a little while before purchasing
so is there any particular LFS in town that you or others here have had better luck with for the most part or in other words they have good stock most of the time and have lived on and spawned etc.

Just want to say that I recently read that the Celestials aren't really threatened, it was just a rumor that got out of hand. And they supposedly spawn like any other danio, i.e. easily and often. So, that said, the prices should be dropping. Cross your fingers. :)
Oh, and I read this in the TFH with the Celestial Pearl Danio on the cover, I think it came out a couple months ago.
I have that magazine as well.....it's funny cause I read lots of other information in that mag that was a bit...well....not to the T.
Regardless of breeding/endangered/etc. LFS now know that people will pay $10 for them so do you think they will lower prices anytime soon? I had my Celestials by themselves for the longest and they have spawned cause they all show the signs of it but there are only an occasional fry. From what I read about it you have the have like breeding mops for them and basically watch them breed so that you can pull eggs....something probably not suitable for a community tank.
Another thing is that when first introduced they were somewhat cheap $3-4 then the endangered sp. scare bumped it up some to like $5-6 after that there was several people who were supposedly breeding them and selling the tank raised Celestials which was really odd cause now the price went up to $10. I read that there is a TR Celestials coming out of florida and california I believe but again the prices went up after I found out about that.
Not really what they are cracked up to be though....they look nice but they hide so much.
I know someone else on the boards is trying to breed them which I think might have a more breeding geared set-up for them...maybe that person will chime in if she's having any luck with them.
Exactly, I don't think many (if any) eggs would make it the couple of days to hatch without some sort of specialized spawning setup (grates, marbles, etc.) If they do spawn like danios, then the eggs would probably be quickly eaten. Too bad they're so shy...I've raised some rosy barbs by following 2 spawners with a net and scooping up the eggs as they go.
And you're right, if LFSs can sell them for $10 each, no reason to bump down the price. Sigh. I still want to try them someday, even if they're shy.
