  • mysterious death

well, as some of you know, i set my tank up about 10 days ago and it almost at the tail end of cycling

last week or so have been pretty stable, my 5 glow lights, 2 black neons, and 2 cardinals all seemed happy and normal acting

as of yesterday my readings were

    ammonia - 0
    nitrite - .25
    nitrate - 0
    ph 7.8

this morning when i woke up, all seemed fine, one of the black neon's (the smaller of the two) was going all over the tank in a rush it seemed like, which i thought was a little different than his (i decided the smaller/slender one is a male) usual behavior, anyway, by the time i left for work, he seemed calm, and all else seemed normal

this afternoon (3ish) i got a chance to stop by my place, i fed the fish, all ate with much enthusiasm and nothing looked out of place, the smaller black neon also fed in his usual manner and did not look rushed like he was in the morning, all of a sudden i realized that i don't see the larger black neon, so i start looking for her all over the tank and eventually see her dead lying at the corner of my bogwood  :(

after i netter her out, nothing was unusual about her, no spots or marks on her body and there is no external signs of anything, so i do a water test again, and the results are:

    ammonia 0
nitrite .25 (actually it is lighter than the .25 color, but not quite blue)
    nitrate 0
    ph 7.8

so, the water is pretty much stable with nitrite decreasing as expected, the plants all look fine, the white fungus on my bogwood is still there (a little thicker, but on the same spots they were before), there seems to be water bubbles trapped within the fungus (not that it is relevant)

anyway, so can anyone try to guess what might have gone wrong, why she was all fine this morning (she was even chasing the other tetra's around in her usual manner) and just dropped dead this afternoon????

this is upsetting because i can't figure out what did it, btw, all the other fish are acting normal from what i can see

    Re: mysterious death

It could be just a untimely end for the fish, who knows, as long as more don't keep dying, it's just a fact of life like anything else. Maybe the more experienced have a better answer for you, but sometimes this just happens, they are afterall, pretty fragile life forms.

      Re: mysterious death

It could be the nitrites, but normally I wouldn't expect, however cardinals are fragile so are BNTs. Another thing could be stress from small schools. The way he died is pretty normal for dropsy, or Neon tetra disease [cardinals are immune; not sure about black neons].
Where did you get the fish?
