Good to know I would have just been doing water changes and thats all. Should I do that with my courser sand as well or is it ok since gas can go through it?

With the finer sand it's nice but make sure to stir it around or dig through it every water change and break it up so it doesn't compact and form anerobic gas pockets.

I'd suggest some tetras. Fairly simple dither fish that should lure your rams out a bit more often. For top layering I would suggest A Hatchetfish (Silver or Marble) or maybe Bloodfins. Mid layer is touchy, you want sturdiness and being able to avoid the rams. I'd go with Diamond or Bleeding Hearts. Your bottom is set, between Cories and Rams its a bit crowded and anything else would get someone pushy in a tank that size. A school of 4-6 Hatchets or bloodfins should really do well and then you can think about adding anything else into the mix.Originally posted by Chris.d514 View PostSo with mine and my wife's tank I have been thinking, since we have the ram and corys, of doing a south american tank. Any suggestions on what would be some good tank mates for a pair of rams and hopefully 4-5 corys?

I once dumped out a bunch of celestial pearl danios and CRS out of a 2217 and they looked healthy and happy

They sell mats of plastic grass which would help survival rate if they happen to scatter the eggs there. I've had the best luck with eheim canisters, probably the best breeder equipment ever!
Few weeks after they've laid eggs just pour out your canister and voila!

Yes, they'll scatter eggs everywhere. Most successful breeders utilize a breeding tank with clear glass marbles all over the bottom and eventually remove the parents. It can be complicated, but it yield the best results. Otherwise simply having a densely planted tank can provide enough refuge for some fry to survive. Usually the initial few times is unsuccessful with newer parents, so I'd simply watch and see if that is what their behavior is indicating.

So if they are scattered does that mean we won't have any babies bc they will eat them?
