  • Sand vs. Gravel

Does anyone have their two cents to put in about whether sand is better or gravel and pros and cons. I am trying to decided if I want a sand or gravel substrate on my next tank. I want sand cause it looks nice, however I dont really know how to clean it like I can with gravel. So I welcome everyones opinions

    Thanks

    Re: Sand vs. Gravel

i personly like the look of sand over gravel. My fish also seem to prefer it. But the bad thing about sand is it can mess up a filter from time to time when it is stired up. You clean the sand the same as gravel. Little harder to start with but once you get the hang of it there is no problem

sand looks better to me.. but it comes down to what kind of filtration. like somefishguy said it can mess up a filter.  i use pool filter sand.. seems heavier and doesnt get mixed up and too high in the water column.  i have a wet dry set up so im not too worried bout sand messin up the filter.

Is there any sand that is a little course or heavier than standard? I do not know the kind of filter I will use yet.

I am sure if you look around you can find some more course sand. There are also a variety of color(some darker some more white. I bought mine form home depot(dont remeber what it was called but it was next to the cement). I havent had too many problems. I have a hang on back filter and i just dont use the extension that makes the tube go all the way to the bottom. A couple times it has got stuck but i just take it apart and  clean out the impleller and it always works.

              Glass Gravel
Small sized tumbled glass is ideal for edging and color fill in landscaped areas. Glass gravel makes colorful decorative landscaping, fish ponds, aquariums and aggregate mix for countertops and flooring.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
