Bowfin are hard to find. I've heard there are bowfin at the park right by the sugarland airport.
Are you looking for redfin (americanus) or chain (niger) pickerel? Chains are actually pretty easy to find if you go east, but redfins prefer larger bodies of water. They are listed as being as far west as the brazos, but I have never seen them west of Galveston Bay. Try ponds and lakes near big thicket.
As for warmouths... you got me there. Never caught them. If you want an american eel, go in January before they make their way down to breed. You can catch some big ones fattening up before their big trip out to the ocean.
Check this link. This is my bible for fish in texas.

I've found a fair number in Richmond in the creek that runs through the George Ranch property. If you go down Berdett Rd you'll run into a bridge that passes over it. Avoid the ranch property to the east. They're also in the pond in the nearby subdivision. Additionally, I've caught them in the Alexander Deussen Park up at the Lake Houston... you'll run into bantams as well.
Caught a lot of redfins around Lake Sheldon, pretty small ones though.

Sheldon Reservoir has warmouth and bowfin. I've caught both there.
MarkWhat are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

This was a beauty I caught up at Lake Houston back in March '10... the ditch in the background was full of debris, no visible movement, but every dip of the net brought up 5 or more sunfish in full breeding colors. Warmouth, greens, orangespots, bluegill and redear all in the ditch. The density was reminiscent of the descriptions of apistogramma in South America.
