I dont know where should this belong. If its in the wrong place mods please remove it. I figure rainbowfish are from Australia and the forum only has ones from Africa and South America. Do any of you guys have experience in keeping rainbow fish? I want to get like 8 or 10 for my community tank. I have no prior experience for these fishes. I did some research on them and found out they are agressive. Also suggested that get one male and many females. The big problem is do they eat small fishes? I have some shrimps, harlequin rasboras, cardinals, and rummynose. Would they also bother bigger fishes like discus? If they do do you think they get along with angel fish? I have a seperate tank for just angelfish wondering do rainbows and angels get along.

Re: rainbowfish
I been keeping rainbowfish more about 8 years now... they truly are one of my favorite fish. I have seen rainbows in the same tank with both angels and discus, although I personally have never kept them with either. Rainbowfish are notorious for having small throats, so eating other fish is not common. I did have an incident a couple years back where a male Boesmani tried to eat a baby otocinclus.. It got stuck and killed them both. I have amano shrimp in an 80 planted tank with numerous Turquoise Rainbows, and the rainbows have never tried to go at them from what I have seen. The amanos have been in there almost two years.
Celebese, Threadfin, and Dwarf Neons arent much bigger than rummynose tetras... what type are you planning on getting.Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Re: rainbowfish
I got some Boesamani today arm. I also saw some that were a little more expensive but were orange instead of yellow. I saw some thread a guy have some there were silver with black tip fins and some there were kinda orange tomato red. Do you know what type those are and whats the price on those. Those tomato red ones are pretty impressive.180 gallon RR wild discus, harlequins, congos, rainbow, pleco, cardinals, rummynose, rcs, and amanos. Â 2260 eheim pressurize co2 4x54 tek lights

Re: rainbowfish
The red ones sound like Irians... and the black tip ones might be celebes.... were the ones that had black tips smaller?
The red ones are generally the same in price as the Boesmani($5-$15), Whereas the celebes are usuallya bit cheaper($4-$7).
Are these what you are thinking of?

Re: rainbowfish
So the salmon red ones are 5-15 bucks thats good. The second link is right the first one isnt. I didnt meant black tips sorry i meant they were silver with red tips on the fins. Do you know what fish store have the all red ones celebs. The only kinds I have seen at the fish stores I went to were either half silver half yellow. Half silver half red. I've seen some blue ones to and the occasion silver with red tips. I have never seen the completely red ones.180 gallon RR wild discus, harlequins, congos, rainbow, pleco, cardinals, rummynose, rcs, and amanos. Â 2260 eheim pressurize co2 4x54 tek lights

Re: rainbowfish
Fish Ranch II does have probably the largest variety of rainbowfish in Houston. You do pay a little more for them there... but then again, they HAVE them. I can almost guarantee you that they have the red Irian rainbowfish. They seem to be a staple. City Pets probably have some as well.
Keep in mind that rainbowfish won't show thier best colors in pet stores. Often, they are cramped and not in planted tanks with lots of hiding spots. The food they are fed may be geared more toward keeping them alive than to show off the fish for price considerations. You'll have to know whhat the fish is going to look like under optimal conditions in some cases
As for a silver rainbowfish with RED tips... could it be one of these?:
A page and forum devoted to caring for Threadfin rainbowfish with links to other species of rainbowfish and articles about the fishkeeping hobby.
Neither of these are expensive, nor will they get as large as the Boesmani. I actually wouldn't recommend the first one if are planning on putting it in the same tank as the Boesmani. The Praecox (AKA Dwarf Neon Rainbow) should be cheaper than the Irian or Boesmani.Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.

Re: rainbowfish
I had some threadfins before....they are awesome but don't expect them to be anywhere near as nice looking as internet pictures like Arm stated.
Take them home and feed them some good food and they will color up! When I got my threadfins they look worse then feeder guppies but not too long after they had massive trailers and vibrant finnage flapping all over the place.700g Mini-Monster tank
