    mosquito larvae

    Hi, as some of you know, I recently had a batch of bristlenose fry.  For now, I keep them in a 2 gallon hexagon tank.  By some horrible chance, some mosquitos layed some eggs in the water and now there are mosquito larvae swimming in the tank with the plecos.  I tried to get rid of them with a net, but theres just too many of them.

    What should I do?  i do not want my plecos to get some disease or anything

    Transfer your BN to a bigger tank and then feed the mosquito larvae to your other fish.

      get a betta or a guppy in there.

        I'd do both. Transfer everything to a bigger tank, which you'll probably need pretty soon anyway, and either try to net them out again (easier in a bigger tank) or put a few guppies/nice fish in there. Mosquito larvae = great food!

        Why is it so hard to get the larvae out? Are they swimming down to the bottom when you try to catch them? How big are your baby plecos? Usually if you leave the larvae alone for a while, they'll all migrate back to the surface, so maybe you could try to remove them in installments?

          theres so many of them, after i scoop out what i think is all of them, the next day there are more swimming around

            I keep a rubber maid bin outside just to let mosquitos bread. scoop them up every day for my guppies.

              A little bit of hay or grass clippings encourages the process. Sometimes feeding too many inside makes you part of the food chain.

                Is this tank inside? Do you leave windows open? It sounds like the mosquitos are frequenting it...? What kind of circulation do you have in the tank? Usually mosquitos won't lay eggs in moving water. Usually.  :wink:

                  This deffinately sounds like repeated hatches. Typically you can net out most of the larva in just 1 pass in so small a tank. If you keep finding new larva then you deffinately have repeat spawnings.
                  Consider my posts as general information based on personal experiences, and in most cases, far oversimplified. Actual mileage may vary. Don't try this at home. If symptoms persist, contact your physician.

                    tank is in my house.  I find them in my 20 g as well now too
