I stopped using UGF when I turned 10.
I ate my fish that died.

I'm confused by this statement, Dan.

What do you mean by "nitrate balance"? What is the concern with ammonia specifically with UGF systems?

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

I'm worried about elevated readings caused by the build up of waste under the plate if I can't properly vaccum it.

          OK
When I vaccuum under mine there's a reddish-brown dust beneath the plate. I'm not sure how much it contributes to the water chemistry if at all.

After Katrina hit I spent 8 months in New Orleans. From Labor day weekend till Thanksgiving i was home 4 days.

During this time I had to depend on my kids to feed my fish. Let's just say everyone ate really good.

Around Christmas I finally took a brake and finally took a look at my tanks. I did a normal water change and tested my parameters. The ammonia and nitrate was off the chart. Didn't loose any fish not sure how but I didn't.

The only way I was able to reestablish good parameters was by massive substrate vaccuming. The fish bio and overfeeding break down were major contributors to this issue.

In realtionship to what I'm trying to relate and learn here is I see this bio collection happening under the plate and I want to isure that I can properly vaccum this material out to keep the load in check.

I know the plates are really porous and it sholdn't be a issue or so i think.

Like myjohnson basically said I haven't used UGV's in years. I've been using e-heims and the occasional HOB.

Andy said he likes them and it's a good way to go on a 125 in his opinion.

I'm really not sure about this thus that's why I started this string.

            I like the feed back.

I did a little research last night and read about sponge filters that you can basically suction cup to the side of your tank. I kind of like this idea as well.

Right now the thought is a Canister, HOB and sponge filter.

            subjext to change I'm sure.

            Thanks Mark
