Salt marshes and tide pools in Freeport and Galveston. They can live in fresh, brackish or full saltwater. I have mine in brackish. If I go crabbing anytime soon, I'll see if I can catch some for you.

Why not just go all out with an alligator gar?

            Because they are smaller.

The Betta sorority tank should give you both what you want. Plenty of color, full of attitude, and they'll eat anything that will fit in their mouth.

I dunno about that, but there would be a great opportunity to get every color in the rainbow, an a few others. Going to Austin today to go look around, an make a few petrified rock deliveries. Still need more ideas for the tank, and some equipment info too...need a canister for the tank, what size? brand?

For a 30g I would recommend the Eheim 2213, but personally I like the setup (internals) of the 2215/2217 better, so if I was buying a filter today I would get the 2215.

What do those typically run price wise?

Eheim is the best, in my opinion, and that of many others. That being said, the instructions included would NOT be put on my top ten list. But enough people on here can help. If you have the money, I'd get an Eheim, and let us help you through the install.

From my experience - Eheim was the first canister filter I had. And it was tough to get the hang of. But once I actually got help with it, I figured out that canisters are VERY simple in their design, and once you get the general idea of what's going on, you can set one up in no time. It just took me a while to get the hang of it because I tried to do it myself, lol. Also because I was reading all this advice online from people that assumed everyone knew the terminology. I'm no DIY type, so I need someone to tell me, "Okay, there's a hose. And then there's the part where the hose connects to the canister. And then there's the part where the hose connects to the spray bar, which is the rigid tube with the holes along the side..." Baby talk. :)

Still need to know an about amount that is reasonable to spend...I don't want to spend $200 on something that is $150 somewhere else..(just numbers) As I have no idea what one should cost...either new, or used...trying to stay with new, as I don't want to buy something that is broken, an me not know how to look for the issues.

Gotcha. I will ask for help, then, as I've never bought one new, and don't know what a 2215, for instance, would cost normally.

                            Anyone?

K so the best I could find was a used 2217 for $180...an I didn't get it..something told me that was too much. So...anyone got a small canister for a 30xtall.....? Thinking I want a canister for sure, so if the tank does end up a little overstocked, there is enough filtration, not to mention the 25% WC per week I am figuring in for a small tank with aggressive fishes.
