the eheim 2260 has such a large media capacity I was wondering what's the best most cost efficient filter media available?

This is the cheapest setup that I use and like.

4L of Effimech Noodles or 5L of Effifx Floss
    3 - 1 gallon bales of BIOBALE
Top off with BLue Bonded pad cut to fit

If you use the noodles instead of the Effifix, use Bulk Foam from Jehmco and cut to fit to seperate the Bio-Bale and the Noodles. If you do , this it only takes 2 Bales instead of 3.

The 5L of Effimech Noodles cost : $35.99

    The 5L of Effifix cost : $17.99

Bulk Foam from Jehmco : FREE I got extra I can give you
    Fine 20" x 24" x 1-1/2" = $13.95

    1 Gallon Bales of BIO-BALE cost : $7.99

Blue Bonded Pad Cost : $3.99 I'd get the sixpack, you could also get this from Jehmco a little cheaper

If you use the 5L of Effifix, then 3-Bales, and top with blue bonded pad

      Total Cost : $17.99 + $23.97 + $3.99 = $45.95 plus some shipping

Basically replace the blue-bonded pad 1-2 months. You can re-use it a couple times if you like, but me, I dont.

All the others 3-4 months depending on fish load. The Bio-Bale simply rinse in Aquarium water, the Effifix clean at the sink with your sprayer.

You could fill it with Lava rock from the hardware store and that shouldn't be more then a few bucks.
Purchasing Bio-balls off MarshReef would probably cost about $10 to fill the 2260.
fshfrk is offering the quiltpadding for cheap by the length.
Pond coarse sponges for the bottom.
