I just noticed my female just had babies. I thought she would hold them for 21 days but I must be wrong. They are swimming round a small house I made with slate rocks. It is a 180 gallon tank. Should I move them to a 10 gallon tank I have and leave the momma in the 180 gallon tank. I have noticed the male and female around the little house I made but today is the first day to see the fry.

The momma will try to eat them. If you definitely want them to survive then yes, move them to another tank. I tend to believe in survival of the fittest. If the babies can't escape their parents they shouldn't even live. Gotta keep the strong genes! It ultimately boils down to, do you want a higher survival rate or a lower survival rate and also if you want to try to fish them out of a 180g.

I breed Nics and they are excellent parents - very protective. Actually, mama was very slow to let the babies venture around. When she was sure I wouldn't harm them then they all would swarm the front when I went to the tank. Awesome thing - they would do their thing all day, but at night time they would all go back in the parent cave to sleep. Very sweet. I started them on brine shrimp, then to crushed flake once bigger. I left the babies with the parents until they got so big I had to move them to their own grow out tank due to amount of fry in the parent tank. Thanks so much,
Lydia

Found out today that Texas Cichlids are not mouth breeders. They lay eggs. Thats why I never saw here mouth get bigger. I am going to watch them a few days then move them out.
Yes the mom and dad are real protective. The male even comes to the glass when we are looking at them and wants to run us off.
