checked it last night. have not tested for nitrAtes but will tonite. It already has a good start of algea about 1/2" from top and spots all over it. will take pics in a couple of days and post.

24/7 for 2 wks. then 16 hrs-6pm till 10am. How does this sound?

reverse photo period, what a good idea i never thought of that!

From what I have learned from planted tanks and refugiums on reef tanks having the algae on on a reverse photo period would keep pH stable.

Algae and plants ulitlize co2 during the photo period and expels co2 off the photo period so having a reverse photo period would keep the pH stable throughout the day. Night time is when co2 usually climbs and pH drops so having it on the reverse photo period would keep it consistent.

Having a 24/7 photoperiod would not allow the algae to rest so to speak which like any living organism it would need that to keep from dieing prematurely.

All that I read says that in the beginning you should run it 24/7. But when it gets going, to run lights about 16 hours. Otherwise you could burn the algae and end up having to start over.

yea on the 100 gal sump. this thing can be made for under 20.00. takes less than 1 hr.
