    Re: Driftwood Problem

all u need is to add activated carbon to your filter, simple as that :)
keep the carbon changed every week or so, and no tannins.
i dont mean the filter cartridge carbon, theres not enough i those to really make a big difference.
i add a filter sock like ie; a mesh filter bag, with very very fine holes, and fill it 1/2- 2/3 full of carbon, then just place it in your filter an thats it.
change the carbon when you start to see tannins again.

      Re: Driftwood Problem

Without a light, it's difficult for me to see exactly what color the water is now but the coffee filters do seem to have made a difference. Of course, I have about 80g's worth of filters going, too. Was hoping to put some fish in on Monday so I have time to just let it filter.

        Re: Driftwood Problem

I have some really dense wood that leached forever and prolly still do but I got some Kent organic absorbsion resin. Put half a jar in a poly bag and stuck in my filter, made sure water is running through it. After a few days the color will clear up and stay clear. Only problem is that stuff is expensive.

+1 on the Purigen... I swear by the stuff and those who have clear water do too!

That and to help you can boil the tannins out of the wood.

              Re: Driftwood Problem

Well, I've changed the water for the third time. Have 80g of filters running (it's a 20L so that's a lot of water being cleaned). One filter has a whole bag of new carbon in it. Changed the coffee filters too as they were brown when I took them out. Never heard of the 'stuff' mentioned above but will definately get some Monday.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your time and suggestions. I sure appreciate it.

                  Driftwood Problems (Solved)

Well, after what seemed like years, three complete water changes, two filters running with one having nothing more than a huge bag of carbon, my tank is now ready for new tenants. I finally bought a hood, turned it on and here's the results.

                  I am THRILLED!
