Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

Hey, I'm with you there!! Good days and bad days, right?

Well, I'm not sure if there's a better method...but I just tape mine on the top and bottom frame of the tank.

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

LOL - I put on the OceanVisions background the day I moved in - the dogs had access to the house for less than 24 hours. I swept out the empty dining room. Then I swiffered the empty dining room - twice and banished both of the dogs. When I got done, I had one little white terrier hair against my nice black background. The thing is, you can't see it from the front, and you can only see it from the side if you have your face smashed up against the glass looking for it...

Personally, I don't like the taped on ones. Maybe I didn't put them on very well, but they were always gaping away from the tank or a drip would run between the background and the tank and then there'd be the hard water line...it just wasn't for me.

Ellen - I have the 3 cats and a pug that sheds so much that I'm afraid it would look like a "Bigfoot" background! But I do remember that I could never keep my background on very well. And it didn't even have water in the tank - well not much!

My husband doesn't like the idea of a background at all, so . . . just another thing to think about down the never ending, cash sucking, fishkeeping road! :aua:

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

The only thing I'd add is that backgrounds can be helpful for the fish (security and all...but yours seem fine), and also if the window ever starts causing problems (algae), it'd be a good idea to put one on there.

I've never really had a problem with my backgrounds. I think part of it might be because I actually slip it underneath the tank's top rim, tape the top, smooth it, then tape the bottom. That way if any water spills out the back way, there's no way it can drip between the tank and background. But hey, I think the OceanVisions stuff is a great idea! I've always wanted to try it.

Thanks for the advice MB. I guess I didn't do it that way when I had mine. At this point it is a matter of economics.

So did you decide what you are going to do with the filtration?

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

I am waivering between getting a powerhead or just adding the airstone to the gravel to get more circulation. But then again, it does make it sense to have all the debris on one end of the tank. I am going to try the feeding ring as well.

I'm really bummed at this point - I have lost 4 Otos and 1 leopard danio last week, and today 2 clown loaches, so I'm not sure what to do anymore. I definetly am not going to go with meds anymore! Stick to the natural stuff!

We are leaving for vacation on the Sept. 6 and won't be back for a week. My daughter will take care of things - I hope - but in the mean time I am leaving the tank as is. The water parameters look good and I'll do a partial water change before we leave. When we get back I'll get this sorted out.

For a really easy & unusual background.
Hang a beach towel on the back of your aquarium.
The Terrycloth holds up well to the drips and sprays and
if you have a spill, you have a towel handy for cleanup.

And if it gets dirty you can toss it in the wash.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

A beach towel would just give my cat a way to get to the top of the tank! He is already so jealous of the fish, he would love to knock that thing over! LOL!

Re: Should I add an air stone to one side

A couple of my cats sit on top of the tank looking down trying to figure out how to get to the fish.  Being covered tops the fish are safe and the cats are entertained.

Glad your loaches are doing better.....

i like to have a towel under all my supplies a lot fo the time, a very handy investment indead, never thought of it as a background use. i took a fishing calendar and had it sit behind my system six eclpise and that looked pretty cool.

oh and the added circulation is difinately not a problem is its just an air pump. might want to go with a decoration just to get another use out of the pump along with the circulation. its more for personal preference then anything else. and its easy to make a feeding ring just out of a thin piece of syrofoam cut into a ring. cheap and easy to find. u can even attach it by using an airline tube holder and just stick it into the foam ring's side.

Tiapan - yea, I was thinking about getting an ornament to use with the air stone. I just think that if I get the water stirred up on the right side more of the goop (or poop will get filtered out.

That's a great idea about the feeding ring. Thanks.

I always have a towel in my tank cabinet. You never know when you will need one.

My youngest cat, Mister Buddy, is just tall enought that if he gets on tip toes he can see into the tank, hanging onto the side of the cabinet. He watches them and smacks the glass when someone gets close to him. He thinks he is the keeper of the tank and hangs out in front of it in the evenings. Thankfully I have a hood or he would be on top trying to get in!
