Nitrate readings are ridiculous

Well after cleaning the canister out and removing all purigen and replacing all the filter floss and then doing a large WC, the nitrates are down to about 10 ppm. Hopefully they'll come down further with more water changes.

Definitely. I feel so bad that this happened but I'm glad there weren't any major losses. I'll definitely have to check prior to each WC weekly since I hadn't been doing that. The fish always looked well so I just depended on that.Originally posted by mnemenoi View Post10 PPM is far better and more manageable. Keep us up on how quickly it builds. Hoping for better results next time...

Ok so I've got the fronts tank under control. Nitrates never go above 10 and are usually around 5 ppm. But the geos tank has still had nitrates around 20-40 ppm, which is weird to me given the weekly water changes, cleaning of the canister, removal of saturated purigen, checking the hoses on the 2260 to make sure there's not too much of a biofilm or sediment buildup, and dropping feeding to once daily. The bioload remains constant at 18 emperors, 4 giant danios, 8 geo tapajos, 5 large silver dollars, 6 sterbai and 3 panda corys, 4 tiger nerites, and 3 adult BN plecos, all in a 105 tall.
Sooooo in a last ditch effort to figure this out, I removed all live plants with large root systems and potted plants that may have been rotting and harboring nitrates, and I overturned the sand bed several times. Cleaned underneath the rocks... Scraped the glass of what little
GSA there was. Draining the tank now for an 80% WC and I'll retest parameters tonight. Here goes! After this, if the nitrates are still the crazy, I dunno what I'm gonna do!
