  • White Sand

Where is the best place to get white sand in the north Houston area? I have heard of pool sand from a pool store. Also heard about play sand but I really dont care about the color of play sand. Leslies pool supply is down the street from my house.

If you got it from Leslie's what is the brand of sand did you buy?

    How much will I need for 2" to 4 " in a 150 or 180 gallon tank?

Where do you get the white plastic crating for the bottom of the tank?

Leslie's pool filter sand is great, that's what we use. It's 'Seagull' brand, but if you just ask them for plain PFS, that's what they'll give you.
Usually 1 pound per gallon will get you the depth you want. We just put PFS in our 150 tall, bought 3 x 50lb. bags and it worked out perfect, if a little deeper than we usually go because of the footprint.

Just make sure to rinse, rinse, rinse... Get the water running clear in your bucket before you put it in the tank, it'll save you a lot of cloudiness in the future!

Oh and the white plastic eggcrate stuff is actually a light diffuser. Home depot, lighting section.

Is the pool sand a white sand or tan color sand?

        Thanks for the info.

Hmmm, I'd say off-white? Not really super white, but not tan either. There's pics of the tank we just set up with PFS at the bottom of the page here: http://www.houstonfishbox.com/vforum...pics-2-9/page6

          And hey, no problem!

I bought sand before from leslie's but it was very tan perhaps because it was not seagull brand?

Have to agree, I've tried 3 different Leslie's and its Tan sand, gets even darker submerged.
Guys at Leslie's know nothing about white sand...

The sand I got was the Seagull brand from Leslies. It is a tan color, The guy at Leslies says they dont get the white sand anymore.

Wow, yours does look really tan... sorry to steer you wrong! Mine looks a LOT whiter; I wonder if it's my lights/eyes/?? or if we got the last of the "white" they don't get anymore. Hmm.

I think yours looks good though! It gives a bit more monochromatic feel to the tank.

I wonder if it is the lighting on our tank that gives it a stronger white appearance. What do you have for lighting?

Leslies changed their pool filter sand about a year ago. Some stores still have the whiter sand but its all about gone now.
My friend that works for Leslies. knows why we want the white sand. He is saving some for me...
