Wet Dry Media

IMO. you can run the Purigen in the canister. Use the wet/dry as your bio. and you will have beautiful water.

So either use something beside eggcrate or stock with bio balls which is a lot lighter and easier to handle when it comes time for sump maintenance

Could you use pea gravel?? Its cheap and the square footage of surface area would be huge. What do yall think, is it possible??

what you can use and for color variation, nylon pot scrubbers.
you can find them at the dollar store or wal mart.
cheap, more bio load than bio balls, and differnet colors so you wont be bored with.
Or you can just buy alot and color coordinate, you know color coordinate. (boomerang, nvmd)
just another solution, FYI.
Sunny hooked me up with Bio Bale, cheers mate. Homie has lots of things in his fish shack. Hoarders, gotta love em'

Iv never personally uswd a wet dry. But in regards to the post about media.....well if ur replacing bio balls! There are other options, med grade lava rock, seachem matrix (personal favorite), the fluval or eheim rings, or theres the option of diy. Theres so much you can do for media, never messed w the purigen yet but have allways head good things. I like a good solid sponge followed by some sort of micron pad-bag or whatever. Carbon is mixed with an amonia remover is good combo. Iv heard of peat gravel, but not familiar with it. But it sounds like with 2 running wet drys u would have a ton of options for how to set up ur filters.

I've always loved wet dry filters. Can't get enough of them. Never had any problems with them. My plan is to use two wet drys and a canister.Originally posted by Notsoballinxhobo View PostWould also like to ask what is the purpose of two wet/dry? Seems like more room for error. Why not just get one that is up to par?

Bio-balls= biological filtration
Purigen=chemical filtration
They are completely different. If you want to replace the bio-balls, bio-bale is another good option.

bio balls are the biological filtration and are not replaced by purigen. purigen would be replacing carbon and is best placed downstream of the wet/dry.

Purigen and bioballs are totally diff. But if you wanna replace the bioballs I would do the k1 or k3 fluidized media
And running purigen in a mesh bag or run it in a reactor.

Josiah, post a pic of that wet/dry. I might be able to trade you a wet/dry with good non-brittle bio balls for it

Is there a special way to use chemical media?
Toss it into a body of water and let it do it's job.

Apparently. Well another reason is, I acquired a wet dry two days ago and it's pretty big. I don't know what the guy did to the bio balls, but they are extremely brittle and break easily. I wanted to look at other media options instead of buying more bio balls. I guess i'll stick with it, but I do want advice on using purigen and how to get it started.

+1Originally posted by Notsoballinxhobo View PostThere's a reason why they are standard...
I use Purigen in the sump, set them by the return pump intake strainer so that water interacts with it before heading back into the tank, but bio balls are my bio media.
