  • How I set up floss on my wet/dry filters

I remove the top cover and the drip tray and lay a piece of egg crate on top of the bio media. You might have to take some bio media out to accommodate the floss. Then I put about 3x or 4x ply floss on the egg crate and then the drip tray and top cover. The second pic is before the top cover goes on.

I did this so that the water coming in flows all over and drips on all the media. I saw that when I put floss on the drip tray that the bio media at the outer edges were dry, therefore underutilized. This has been an easy fix and handles at least 80% of mechanical filtration in my tanks.

Thanks for the tip Sunny. I think I'm going to run my WD setup this way - i think it distributes the water across the bio media better.

Yes sir. I've been ruining my W/D filters like this for a couple of months now and I'm happy with the results. Easier to change out the pads on my W/D than having to clean canisters frequently.

I completely agree. This is what I did when I had a wet/dry on my cichlid tanks. It worked great!

A word of caution: Keep up maintenance on the floss. If you let it get too dirty (and don't have an extra slit in the side of the wet/dry for overflow water), the water going to come out of the tank faster than it will go through the filter floss.

I do leave a little space between the floss and the sides of the sump so that water can flow around the floss if it gets too clogged up.
