Has anyone used these Suction Cup Lifters to move a tank?

Harbor Freight buys their top quality tools from the same factories that supply our competitors. We cut out the middleman and pass the savings to you!

I want to paint a background on my 75g tank which means it needs to be moved to the garage and back. The charts on the internet claim the tank should weight 140 lbs empty. I'm hoping my daughter's boyfriend can find a buddy to move the tank for me.

Has anyone ever used these exact lifters? If not, are there any other lifters that are recommended?

How many should I get? I was thinking two would be enough, but would it be better to get 4 so each hand has its own handle to hold on to?

Nifty looking tool! May go get a few myself. It does say "This dual cup suction lifter can lift up to 125 lbs. of non-porous materials". No clue if four of them will work though. There's one way to see if it'll work!

Not the harbor freight ones but the nicer brand/quality, yes.

I have the small glass holding suction cup thing from harbor freight.... only used to hold the car door glass up while working on it.... no bueno.

        Vicki:
Check with Sunny he have used the ones from Harbor Freight. I purchased 2 but have not used them yet. You can also get the movers dollie from Harbor Freight if you do not trust them carrying the tank.

Letta! Nice to see you back!

Vicki, each of those cups are rated for 200lbs but the glass has to be clean and dry. Btw, are you doing this by yourself?

Sorry, just read the bit where you're getting help. You might not need suction cups for a 75 gallon.

Also found out that they do not grip on painted glass surfaces.

I doubt any kind of roll-on or spray-on paint has adhesion strong enough to pick up a tank with

The dolly may be a bigger pain that it's worth since there would be a few places with a step that would have to be crossed, but the price tag is really cheap so it's worth getting just in case. That way the boys wouldn't have to carry the tank the entire way which might help if they're struggling with the weight of the tank. Plus, that would decrease the amount of time I'd be trusting the suction lifters to not accidentally lose their grip, causing everything to fall and break. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks, Sunny! I'm out of school for awhile so I get to play with my tanks and enjoy talking with you guys for a while now!

I'm not as concerned with the tank's weight as much as how cumbersome it is to take it in and out of the stand given that there's a lip that covers three sides. So there's no place to actually grab the tank, and I don't want the boys to drop it.

I'll clean the glass and then hit it with some rubbing alcohol to remove any oils just before putting the lifters on. Do you think that would make the glass clean and dry enough?

Yeah that should work. I use brake parts cleaner from the local auto parts store. Of course I apply it on a rag first and not spray directly on the glass.
