I was just wondering, instead of using the pre-made carbon filter that come with the filter, can you just fill the space with scrubbies or maybe Bio Max Ceramic media?

That's what I do when the original filter cartridge gets old, that or just put a layer of filter padding.

same here i do the aqua clear type, with a sponge on the bottom and ceramic media on top... sometimes i use filter padding to cover the outflowing water well so i get as much waste as possible.
