Many of us add salt to our aquarium water. Some of us do it on a regular basis as a prevenitive med. Salt inhibits the uptake of nitrite into fishes blood. Some of us keep brackish water fishes. Some of use it for treatment of ick and other parasites. Salt can even be used to treat wounds. I use it to hatch my baby brine shrimp for fry food. We use table salt, some use kosher salt, some use sea salt.
Most of us know to use the non-iodized table salt as the toxicity of iodine to fish is unknown.
Sea water is 0.35 % salinity / 35 parts per thousand / 35 teaspoons per gallon
Most of us use 3 to 5 teaspoons per gallon to treat our fish.
Supprise, Sea Salt and Kosher salt are coarse ground. They are bigger crystals than fine ground table salt with bigger spaces inbetween the crystals. So if you are substituting coarse salt for table salt measurements you may need up to twice as much. ie if you want 5ppt you need to add 10 teaspoons of coarse salt. If you are following directions and the instructions call sea salt, you may want to use only half as much if you keep loaches. Cichlids & Anabantoids are derived from marine ancestors and are more salt tolerant than loaches, characins & catfish.
Test this for yourself, use a hydrometer to measure your salinity
