Sizing a Heater for 72 gallon bowfront - Which one?
Sizing a Heater for 72 gallon bowfront - Which one?
My heater died on my freshwater 72 gallon tank.
What size heater do I need for this tank? How much should I expect to spend?

Reason: Search Engine Hit - Title
Jarrod - Houston, Texas
150 gallon - my African cichlid monster tank (I know it isn't a big as yours)
17 gallon - Threadfin rainbows and corys lightly planted
5 gallon - planted red cherry shrimp breeder
3 gallon - planted red cherry shrimp breeder
Depends on a couple of things....
what temperature do you want to keep the water ?
what temperature do you keep the room the tank is in ?
covered or not covered, what type of lighting, internal or external filtration.....
Basicly where does the heat leak out and how much temp difference is there ?
Personally, I prefer 2 smaller heaters as a fail safe.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

For a 70-80g kept inside the house, all you need is one 150w heater. I would not get two smaller ones as a fail safe. It's not really a fail safe because having two runs the risk of either one malfunctioning. I would rather recommend a temp controller. It cuts power off to the heater when the water reaches a certain temp.

i agree that two heaters is not really a great choice, i only use one in my tanks but it is stil an option...i do think a 300w will be much more beneficial than a 150w however because winter is coming...plus a 300w is like 2 bucks more so might as well

+1 what MJ says all you really need is 1 150W. As most people the coldest it really gets in the house is about 70-74 and that is close to night time temps of most tropical waters.
Man I don't even need a heater on my tanks but for like 1.5 months out the year. Most of the time I'm trying to cool my tanks down and my heater never even runs.
My CF lights, sump mag drive, power heads, and eheim canister filter keeps my water hot as is.
On my 330 it stays at around 84 with the heater never running. My three ballasts and pumps under the tank heats up the water when it gets filtered and my MH and T12 keep the top of the water column nice and warm too.
I run a 200 in both my 110 and 180.. and they keep the water nice and good. House is kept at a constant 70 degrees
