  • Canister Filters...

I currently am running a Eheim 2028 in a Oceanic 135 freshwater setup.

It is OK, but it I have had leak issues and the self primer doesn't.

    I am looking into a Fluval FX5.

What are your opinions on the best canister filter and what media do I use for the FX5 if I get that.

    Thanks in advance

    Great discussion on that here:

Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Or maybe he was just a dragon. But he was still TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

You know, fish are great. I love my fish. But what I really want is a monkey.

I don't know if you are giving up completly on Eheim but I would have to recommend the Eheim Pro III 2080. I have one running on a 90 gallon(yeah it's overkill) and it works wonders. Sorry to hear you are having issues with yours, but I can assure you that is a rarity with Eheim cannisters.

I have had other eheims (Still do actually) and they did not leak... I do not want another "Water Event" on the hardwood floors.

How long has the 2080 been out?

          Thanks for the info...

I think we have all "Water Event" or two in our time. They are never good but I am thinking better on hardwood than carpet. As far as the 2080 I do not know how long they have been out. They also have a model that has a built in heater, eliminating at least one piece of equipment hanging in your aquarium.

I have an Eheim Pro II 2128 with the built-in heater (never used the heater) and several Rena canisters (3 XP4s, 2 XP2, and 1 XP1). Some have leaked, others have not. But in all cases, their leaking was preventable had I paid closer attention to the seals.

I now put each canister in its own tub so I can easily see water that's leaking and fix it before it becomes a big event.

Any and all canisters will leak, regardless of the brand or model. They all have the same basic need for a proper seal, and if that seal is compromised, then a leak will occur. The solution is to learn how to ensure a good seal.

nah, you can never over kill, that is only x5 turn over rate, i am running 215gph on both my 10g, and everyone inside is very very happy

The advantage the 2080 has is two intake hoses Vs. one. This allows you to have intakes on both ends of the tank and a relatively high output return in the center. It works pretty well for filtered flow that way. Although never having owned a 2262 this all opinion

Turning your water over 21.5 times per hour. That may be a record that stands for ages to come.

I've always made sure that I'm getting a minimum 4.5 to 1 ratio on my filteration. I think anything about 4x per hour turn over in filteration is sufficient. It's worked for me for years and my fish are happy.

This is very true. I have used this on my smaller setups before I got into larger fish.

10:1 is what I say is a minimum when you get into larger fish.

It is going to depend a lot on how you are stocked and what your waterchange schedule is like

FYI, 21.5 X turnover rate is not even close to the record. But in general, I do agree with your latter statement.

Most freshwater fishes are going to be fine in a tank that has 4 x turnover rate.

It really depends on the number of fishes you have, their size, water volume, and amount of biological media.
I ate my fish that died.
