wet/dry powerhead as return

I'm thinking of building a wet/dry system for my tanks either my 58g or 75g although the 75 already has a canister filter on it. Would a maxijet 1200 give me enough flow for either of these tanks. I would probably be using a homemade acrylic/plexiglass wet/dry sump and overflow ran into the powerhead then back via a spray bar. I'm kinda new to this stuff so any help would be appreciated

not sure how strong a maxijet is but ive used the powerheads out of the jebo internal filter as a return pump.

would it work? yes. would it be ideal? no.
by the time you account for head height your probably only pushing around 200gph. maybe, if that much. for a 60-75g i would try for more like 450-500gph with head loss included.

+1. MJ are not heavy duty pumps at all. I personally think any practical head pressure would reduce it even lower than 200pgh.

The pump is the one thing you don't want to be cheap on. Plus a used mag 7 goes for about 45 bucks on marshreef.

I've used maxi jet 1200 0n a return for a 10 gal tank. If you have 2 mj's run 2 seperate returns. But a bigger pump would be better like others have said. I just bought a rio1700 for 49.95 from city pets and added it to the 60 for more flow. It already had a mag7 return on it. What kind of overflow are you going with on this set up?

i was going to build an acrylic overflow box. and im searching online for a used pump right now. could a magnum 350 work because i can get one of those for practically free.
