  • twigs ready for the tank?

i was wondering if my wood twigs were ready for the tank. i left them in a bucket full of hot water for a bout a day or so..and here is what it looks like after the last waterchange.

4 hours after i changed the water.

i kinda dont like the amazon blackwater looking for my tank for some reason..and will my aquaclear filter 20 clear up the remaining tannin if some leaks?

does anyone have any ideas on how i can suspend a twig or two above the water without using suction cups, or is that the only good way to do it. lol looks kind of tacky imo.

when i meant above the water, i meant not even touching the water. i want it to be on top of the water so my archer can shoot bugs off of it.

The tannins are going to leach for about a month or two with this wood. Just be patient and keep with the water changes and it will eventually stop turning your water brown. Another thing to expect is that you might see a jelly-like fungus grow on the wood at first too. Nothing to worry about, just brush it off before water changes and siphon it out. It too will stop after time.

Use could use a very thin fishing line to tie it to if there was something like a light fixture or glass top that you could tie that to.

I forgot to mention...tannins don't get filtered out. Carbon supposedly helps a little, but really the best way to get through it is time and patience and water changes.

i guess i can dump the idea of putting these twigs into the water. lol sounds very annoying to maintain the tank with them inside.

Not really. I mean, you have to do water changes anyway, right? I was just letting you know what to expect at first. It's not a forever thing to deal with.

I concur. And since these are "twigs," they shouldn't leach too badly, at least not as much as a huge piece of driftwood.

I happen to think that driftwood that's breaking the water's surface and placed to be permanently out of water can look very nice. It's just a matter of arranging the wood into a sturdy formation, just like you would if it was to be totally underwater. And if you need some sort of support, as it was said, you can use fishing line or cotton thread or anything inert to keep it in place. :)
