I thought the chlorine evaporates after a couple of days but the chloramine stays around and you can not test for it?

From my reading, it seems that you can test total chlorine and free chlorine and the difference is the amount of chloramine in the water. At least, that's what I understood it to be, I could be completely wrong in my understanding of it. I'm an engineer, not a chemist

So, EK, more details on the carbon bottle you use?

Astex that is correct.. you test for free (chlorine) + bonded (chloramine) and then you test for free chlorine. The difference is the amount of bonded (Chloramine).
With this knowledge you now know how much Prime/Amquel to use

I am using a carbon bottle which is meant for drinking water filtering.... similar to that you buy from HomeDepot but on a much larger scale and able to handle a lot more pressure.

More like what is used at some of the nicer car washes.

It has been my experience when automating an industrial water treating plant in Bayport, that in the long Bright summer days, they occasionally get an algie bloom and treat it by adding more chloramines.

Also during construction when attaching to an existing water line or when repairing a broken water line they add additional chemicals to protect us from the bacteria that could possibly have gotten into the pipes.

So I suggest you test the water every time you do a water change, not just once a month.

Thiosulfate will break the bond in Chloramine between the Chlorine and the Ammonia, and it binds Chlorine and most heavy trace metals.
The ammonia which is left behind should be in nominal amounts, and is perfectly safe for fish in cycled systems. However, you should test the ammonia level in your tap water after treating it. If you *double* dose, Thiosulfate will make your Ammonia test kit UNABLE to read ammonia anymore.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

That's something for everyone to keep in mind.

Most good de-chlor/binders will give false results when testing.

Carbon bottles are the way to go. One of these days I am going to build one with FshFrk, just need time, and spare money to get one that I want. It needs to be one I can set in the garage and not have to move

For $300 you could get a giant one which they use for the carwash place filled with GAC

Where would you buy such a large carbon bottle? Not that I have that much money now, but it could be saved in a couple months.
