I haven't really done anything to the water to trigger them to breed yet.

Maybe I'll give it a try soon.

From most accounts, zebras are breeding more often when triggered by the same events that cause them to breed in the wild (makes sense to me). In the wild, they breed in response to the onset of the seasonal change from dry to rainy. This change is accompanied by certain significant changes in the water parameters.

Dry season: Water temps higher (84), flow lower, TDS higher (>400), ph higher (>8), water dirtier, and food less plentiful.

Onset of rainy season: Storms bring rains and storms also are accompanied by a noticeable drop in barometric pressure.

Rainy season: Water temps lower (as low as 76), flow stronger, tDS lower (<110), pH lower (>6), water cleaner, and plentiful supply of food.

Many people report on the forums of triggering a "rainy season" and this in turn triggers the fish to breed. This is not to say that the only way to have them breed in captivity is to simulate the dry and rainy seasons. At the same time, other people have had results by simply ignoring the fish until one day nature just takes its course. Lol, I been taking the later approach to breeding them b/c I don't like messing with the water.

I might try a "rainy season" in the coming months. The fish have been in condition mode for basically a year. My plan is to wait for a rainy day, do a water change with tap mix with RO (maybe 30/70) and drop their temp to 76 and slow bring it back up to 82. I don't know....lol, it seems like a lot of work and I'm only typing it out. :)

But yeah, if they breed....I'm hoarding.

Found this video online of the Xingu river and thought it was cool I just wanted to share. Kinda gives us an idea of how the fishes biotope would look like.

Also shows a diver collecting some plecos for import I'm guessing.

Very nice zebras. Good luck breeding them. What have you been feeding them to condition them?

                  Very sad about the Xingu.

This is a link to a thread I made about upgrading the filtering system.

@ grant, I feed them anything they will eat.

Ok guys, finally got some breeding action pictures!

lets hope something comes of it.

Please excuse the picture quality. I had to take some with the flash on to get the picture to show up right.

First up, female hangout around the male's cave:

Second up, male trappin female (or trying to at least):

lol, thanks for the vote of confidence.

But I'm not going to get my hopes up.

They have done this before.....and nothing came of it.

I really need to start doing water changes with RODI water to get the TDS levels down.

                            That might get them going.

Random bonus shots with no flash.

Really shows their natural colors. :)

And finally....A picture with flash so you guys can compare pictures with vs. without flash.
