Sexing Frontosa is very difficult, most Fronts can not be sexed until they are somewhere in the 3+ year range. Venting by someone that has been doing it for a while is the best (unless you want to send in a D&A sample). . If you are hoping to sex juvies I know of no one that claim to be able to do it. Good luck..

Venting is the most accurate way and even then it's not 100% unless they are sexually mature.

i have 5 burundi that i believe are getting close to the "mature" age and i was wondering if i had any females. Two of my guys have a very distinct hump and are fatter/healthier looking that the other 3. The smaller ones have darker colors and show no sign of a hump. could this be an indication of female?

Color and the frontal bump shows nothing. Females can have those as well.

you should really try to vent thats the best way to do it . it is the only defining phenotype for sexing. the males will have a pointy or triangular sex organ and the females will be more rounded. heres pics http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article...osa_sexing.php around 4" it gets a little easier but fully grown would be the easiest.

I have seen females with frontal lobes just as big.

Sorry to discredit you but I have seen otherwise.

Not saying you are wrong just adding to the thread that it could go either way and not impossible for the female to have the frontal lobe.

I guess the thing I am trying to point out is that Venting is the best way to determine sex.

Your experience is adding to the collection of experience here which if you look at the bigger picture makes us all that much more experienced as a whole.

How old are your fish F-Rex ?
The only thing I know about fronts are they some of the slowest in fish terms to become mature.. it takes between 36-42 months of age for them to mature. Most fish are sold when juveniles are around 2-3" in length and ages less than 6 months old. You have to wait usually 3 yrs from the time you get your fish unless you are told how old they are before they come sexually mature.
Just my 2.2 cents in this section :)

If you email pics of the Burundi you want vented I will vent them if they are large enough.......at least 3.5".

Please take the picture so that when your looking at the vent area, the tail is at the bottom.

Go to www.cyphos.com and do a search on venting. There are 2 holes at the bottom of your fish. The lower one is the anal hole and the one above it determines the sex of the fish. A female has a larger hole and the male a smaller one.

I am not an expert in venting. The only way you can be 100% is to wait to see the breeding tube of a female come down. It looks like those tiny straws used for stirring coffee, except it is a cloudy white color and extends about 1/8" below the female. You will definitely see it when it is extended.

                            Best of luck.
