I've got several fake plants in my tank, but I have lately been interested in adding live plants to my tank and taking out some of the fake. I like amazon swords and plants with big leafs like that. However, in both galleries I've visited lately they have recommended against live plants with cichlids for obvious reasons. They will bite them up and such. Is this more of a situational thing, or is it really against the grain to go with live plants and cichlids? I want some real plants, but I also don't want to have a mess of chewed up leaf in my tank lol. What have your experiences been? And also, can you only put live plants in gravel, or can you do it in sand and other substrate as well?

Depends on what cichlid you are keeping.
Rooted plants will eventually die with cichlids constant moving of the gravel and also a hassle with the uprooting the plants.
Stem plants will do ok but viewed as food by most... also most of them require nutrient rich substrate or good fertilization and lighting.
You could do Anubias and Ferns since they do not need to be planted and can be tied to rocks/driftwood/etc. and most fish do not like the taste of either.

Yep, if they are SA (rain forest) chiclids & lay their eggs on plant leaves - plants are OK
