This is pond sand.... it was crystal clear again after about 6 hours.
Pool filter sand settles much faster. kinda wish i had used that instead. I'll change it out when i move next.

Well my tank sprung a slow leak.... forcing me to scramble to salvage water and relocate the fish. I didn't lose any fish... but had a carpet with 10 gallons of water on it. After a little bit of thought, I decided I would reseal the tank myself. I've resealed tanks before, but they never came out "professional" looking. Since this tank is the first this that you see when you enter my place, I wanted to make sure that it looked pretty good. I consulted the houstonfishbox thread talking about resealing tanks. Someone mentioned using plastic spoons for a cleaner effect on the corners. I thought I'd give it a shot on the entire tank. I used an Exacto knife to remove all the old silicone. Then I taped off all the areas that I would be resealing... This is how it turned out:

I took all my malawi fish out of my 55 gallon tank and spread them though my other tanks so that I could keep all my tangs together. Luckily my 200 was underpopulated - so I had no problem putting them in a 55. I took some of the holey rock (that I got from Burnett TX with Geoff_Tropheus) out of the 200 and put it in the 55. This is what it looks like today:

Thanks... I'm satisfied for my first attempt of resealing with a spoon. Definitely room for improvement though.

great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the tape works well. I used a wet finger to smooth mine out. I had disposable gloves on.

My concern is that I've heard that larger tanks (anything 75g and up) should be taken completely apart, cleaned and then put back together. Patching or re-sealing the inside will work, but likely to leak again....could be 1, 2 days or 2 months.
I hope I'm wrong or should I say that I heard wrong.
Raul - I hope you heard wrong too... I hadn't heard that.
RonR - I always had trouble when I used my hand. I could never get it very smooth (too shaky I guess)
Eklikewhoa - 10gallons =swamp!!
Bnoutsnoutuk - I used tape to get clean lines and pulled it up <30 seconds after applying the silicone

Well, I thought I would bring this topic back to the living. A few things have happened since I last updated this thread. I have since sold the tank, moved, and bought another tank of the same size. Most of the fish have been sold or relocated. All that is currently in the tank is six Julies and a brown BN pleco. This tank will soon house my group of Cyprichromis leptosoma "Jumbo Blue Orchid" from Mike at Texas Tropheus Traders.

I've got a Fluval FX5, Rena XP2, and MaxiJet 1200 for filtration / circulation. There is a 100 watt heater on the tank and one 4 foot strip light. The substrate is now pool filter sand. The rocks are mostly for the Holey Rock safari that I went on with Tiapan and Geoff_Tropheus.

I plan to put 2 FX5's on my 300 and I am a little worried about the bio capacity of the filter.
I guess I will soon find out...
My 300 is going to have them 17 Petrocrhomis Trewavasae, 21 Petrochroms Famula Chimba, 9 Tropheus Lunangwa, and 30 Tropheus Ikola.
Any opinons?
